Kelsey Grammer says writing Karen: A Brother Remembers helped him remember his sister as a person, not only through the violence of her death. He has not described grief as finished: in a 2025 PBS interview, he said “the grief will never actually disappear.” Instead, he says his memories of Karen’s life have become more present than the memory of how she died.

How did Kelsey Grammer cope with his sister’s murder?

Grammer’s account centers on writing his sister’s story. He conceived Karen: A Brother Remembers as a book about Karen’s life, not simply an account of his grief. The Los Angeles Times described it as a life book as much as a book about loss. In an interview with PBS’s Amanpour & Company, Grammer said the book helped him remember her life more readily than her death.

He described the change carefully. “It’s never really letting [Karen] go, but it’s letting some of the charge on the grief go,” he told the Los Angeles Times in an interview published May 7, 2025. He also said, “when I think of Karen, I don’t think of her death as much as I do of her life.” These are his reflections on his own experience, not a claim that grief has ended or that writing a memoir works the same way for everyone.

Who was Karen Grammer?

Karen Grammer was Kelsey Grammer’s younger sister. She was abducted, raped and murdered in Colorado Springs on July 1, 1975, shortly before her nineteenth birthday, according to the Los Angeles Times. The violence of her death is part of the story, but Grammer’s stated purpose in writing the memoir was to give space to the person she was: joyful and vivacious, rather than allowing the circumstances of her final hours to define her.

The Times reports that Grammer acknowledges unanswered questions about why Karen was at a restaurant that evening. Any explanation he offers is his own theory, not an established account of her reasons.

Why did Grammer write Karen: A Brother Remembers?

Grammer has said he wanted to tell Karen’s story and restore her life and personality to memory. That focus also shaped how he talks about the book’s potential audience. In the PBS interview, he said he hoped it might help people who had experienced a similar event or lost someone. That is his hope for readers, not a promise that memoir-writing or reading can relieve grief.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the print edition was 456 pages and listed at $32 in its May 7, 2025 coverage; that is a historical price, not a current offer. The book’s length and format do not make it a guide to treatment: Grammer presents a personal account of remembering his sister.

What has Grammer said about grief and speaking publicly?

Grammer has described grief as enduring. In the PBS Amanpour & Company interview, he said “the grief will never actually disappear.” In the Los Angeles Times interview, he cautioned against treating suffering as a distinction: “It’s not a badge of honor to have suffered grief like that.” Together, his remarks convey a shift in what comes to mind when he remembers Karen, rather than a claim of closure.

ABC News’s May 2, 2025 interview page identifies grief and Grammer’s struggles with cocaine and alcohol during his television career as subjects of his conversation with Diane Sawyer. Those topics should not be treated as proof of a specific cause-and-effect relationship between his sister’s murder and his substance use.
