Kelly Ripa later said she and Mark Consuelos broke up about a week before their May 1, 1996, Las Vegas elopement, then got back together the day before they married. Consuelos also confirmed that they had split, though he described it as brief. Their accounts are retrospective; a 1996 interview confirms the wedding date and location but does not mention the breakup.
What Ripa said about the breakup
Ripa told the story on the debut episode of the Comments by Celebs podcast. In an account reported by Entertainment Tonight on July 13, 2018, she said they broke up and reunited the day before they left for Las Vegas. She placed the split about a week before the wedding.
Ripa recalled that on the day they reconciled, they appeared on a pre-taped Mother’s Day special for Live with Regis and Kathie Lee. She also said they had met while working together on All My Children.
How Consuelos described their reunion
On Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Consuelos confirmed that they had broken up shortly before eloping. Bravo reported on February 21, 2019, that he recalled seeing Ripa at an appearance on Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, where she would not speak to him, and following her into Central Park. He said, “I stalked her and we went back to my place and we got married the next day — it wasn’t a big breakup!”

That is Consuelos’s recollection of the reconciliation, delivered in a light television-show setting. It adds the Central Park detail and his view that the split was brief; it does not establish why they broke up.

Ripa and Consuelos married in Las Vegas on May 1, 1996. Their marriage interview in Soap Opera Digest, originally published in the August 27, 1996 issue and republished in 2017, offers a contemporaneous account of their courtship and elopement. Ripa called the decision “very weird and very simple,” while Consuelos recalled suggesting, “Let’s go to Vegas.” The interview confirms the wedding context, but does not mention a breakup.
The sequence of the split and reconciliation comes from their later accounts: Ripa said they got back together the day before the elopement; Consuelos likewise recalled reconciling and marrying the next day.
