Us Weekly transcribed Clarkson telling the audience, “This next song, I’ve never rewritten a song more,” followed by, “And then, well, life set in and I had to change the lyrics.” As she struggled to compose herself, she added, “I’m really trying to pull it together.”
What is the story behind “Piece by Piece”?
“Piece by Piece” is the title track of Clarkson’s 2015 album. Us Weekly reported that its original inspiration included her relationship with Blackstock and her estrangement from her father. At the July 2025 show, Clarkson described changing the lyrics as her life changed and sang a revised version.

What happened after the July 26 show?
- August 6, 2025: Clarkson announced that she was postponing the remaining August dates of her Las Vegas residency. She said the children’s father had been ill and that she needed to be present for their children.
- August 7, 2025: Blackstock died at age 48. A representative for his family told The Associated Press that he had battled cancer for more than three years.
- August 11, 2025: Us Weekly published its report on the resurfaced video of the performance.
What the timeline does—and does not—establish
The performance occurred 12 days before Blackstock’s death, based on the reported dates. Clarkson’s later announcement confirms that he had been ill and that she was prioritizing their children. Those facts do not establish what Clarkson knew about his condition on July 26, nor do they establish that the performance was a farewell or a reaction to his impending death.
Clarkson and Blackstock were former spouses at the time of the performance and his death. The available reporting describes what she said and did onstage; it does not provide evidence of her private knowledge or intent.
