What Keith Urban reportedly sang
Parade reported that Baugh shared video of the performance on Instagram on September 26, 2025. In the clip as described by the outlet, Urban sang: “When they’re tryna get to you, Maggie I’ll be your guitar player.” The familiar lyric is “When they’re tryna get to you, baby I’ll be the fighter.” Parade’s October 1, 2025 report identifies Baugh as Urban’s touring guitarist.
Us Weekly reported that Baugh reshared a clip with the caption, “Did he just say that👀.” Its October 6 explainer also noted an earlier April 2025 performance featuring a different alteration, so the September clip was not the only reported live lyric change. The reviewed accounts do not establish the exact concert date or venue.
Who is Maggie Baugh?
Maggie Baugh is the guitarist who toured with Urban and the person named in the altered line, according to Parade’s report. Baugh shared or reshared video of the performance, which helped bring the moment to public attention. That identifies her role in the incident; it does not establish that Urban intended the lyric as a personal or romantic declaration.

Why “The Fighter” is associated with Nicole Kidman
“The Fighter” is a duet by Urban and Carrie Underwood on Urban’s 2016 album Ripcord; it was released as a single in 2017. The song’s connection to Kidman comes from Urban’s own accounts of its inspiration, as reproduced in Us Weekly’s 2017 interview roundup.
In a March 2017 interview with The Boot, Urban said, “It was just a very quick, quick song to write. Because I literally thought about Nic and I and our relationship in the beginning, and some of the things we had said all went into that song.” Us Weekly also reproduced his description of the song in a press release: “It comes from a very real place. It’s a song about helping to heal and protect someone you love. It’s a song about reassurance that you’ll always be there to take the blows the world can throw.”

Us Weekly further quoted Urban’s March 2017 Billboard interview: “It’s all from a conversation my wife and I had early on in our relationship, that when things get tough, I need to hold her tighter and just try to take care of her,” and, “The song is about wanting to heal somebody, wanting to take care of somebody, wanting to protect somebody. It’s really like a vow in so many ways.” These are Urban’s reported explanations of the song’s origins and meaning—not evidence about why he changed a line during a later performance. Us Weekly’s October 6, 2025 explainer reproduces the statements and attributes them to the original interviews and press release.

The reported wording replaces “baby” with Baugh’s name and changes the promise from being “the fighter” to being her “guitar player.” The clip generated discussion, especially given its timing, but neither the footage nor the reports establish Urban’s motive or that the lyric was connected to his separation from Kidman.

Those events provide a timeline, not proof that the performance predicted, caused, or explained the separation. Us Weekly reported that Urban and Baugh had not addressed the lyric changes in its October 6 article. Parade’s timeline report and Us Weekly’s explainer do not substantiate claims that the lyric proves a romantic relationship.
