Why reported earnings and net worth are different
Net worth is the value of a person’s assets minus liabilities. Reports about annual earnings, salary, dividends, or a company’s revenue do not establish that total: each measures something different, and none alone shows what an individual owns or owes.
In a 2011 interview, The Guardian asked Knightley about a report that she had earned £36 million in a year. She responded, “No, I’ve never earned anywhere near what it’s reported I’ve earned.” Her statement directly disputes that reported annual figure; it does not disclose her net worth. What Knightley said about the $50,000 figure
Two interviews in 2014 addressed different claims that can be mistaken for one another.
The claim that she lived on $50,000 a year
In TIME, Knightley rejected the claim that she lived on $50,000 annually: “That’s not true. I mean, I wish it was true. That would be incredible—it’s a good amount of money to live on. But no.” This was a response about living costs, not a statement of total income or wealth. TIME interview.
The approximate salary she described for 2012
In a separate Glamour interview, she was asked whether she had allotted herself a salary of around $50,000 in 2012. Knightley said, “Yes, it’s something around that. I mean, if I want or need something that goes over that, I get it, but, yes, around that.” She described an approximate personal salary arrangement for that period, not a limit on her income, a full accounting of her spending, or a net-worth figure. A 2013 Independent article reported that accounts for Kck Boo Ltd, associated with Knightley’s film and modeling work, showed £1.5 million in company earnings, with £11,000 in wages and £20,000 in dividends for a particular year. It also cited an estimated £30 million wealth figure attributed to the Sunday Times Rich List. These are historical secondary reports, not a current personal balance sheet. Company earnings are not automatically personal income, and wages or dividends do not reveal assets, liabilities, taxes, or ownership in full. The Independent’s 2013 report.

How to read the numbers
- $80 million: A Celebrity Net Worth estimate, with the page stating it was updated September 25, 2026; it is not a verified disclosure.
- £36 million in a year: A reported earnings claim Knightley disputed in The Guardian in 2011.
- About $50,000: In TIME, she denied living on that amount annually; in Glamour, she described an approximate salary around that level for 2012, with additional spending available when needed.
- £1.5 million, £11,000, and £20,000: Historical amounts reported for company earnings, wages, and dividends—not a net-worth calculation.
