Keerthy Suresh on What ‘Mahanati’ Changed—and the Hardest Part of Recreating Savitri

For Keerthy Suresh, the hardest part of recreating Savitri was performing her songs on screen. The role also changed what seemed possible in her career: Suresh later said Mahanati opened opportunities to explore films centered on women. That helps explain the “spoilt” framing in a 2018 Scroll interview headline, though the full interview is not available to verify her exact wording or its context.

What was the toughest part of recreating Savitri?

In a 2020 interview with Cinema Express, Suresh identified replicating Savitri’s songs on screen as the toughest challenge. The difficulty was not simply reproducing a familiar image: she had to build a performance from evidence about Savitri’s screen presence and manner.

“I guess I pieced together the character from various sources,” Suresh said. She explained: “I spoke to her daughter. I gathered a lot of information about her body language and style. I read a lot of books. I put all this together and formed a personality within myself.” Cinema Express, 2020.

How did she prepare for the role?

Suresh drew on Savitri’s films and a range of archival and personal sources. A 2018 Cinema Express interview describes her watching Savitri’s scenes and consulting Savitri’s daughter Vijaya Chamundeswari, her mother, actor Menaka, and director Nag Ashwin. She also used newspapers, radio interviews, and Savitri’s letters. Menaka shared observations about Savitri’s acting style and mannerisms. Cinema Express, 2018.

That approach was interpretation, not a claim to become Savitri completely. Suresh told Cinema Express, “I can never be Savitri amma, completely, and you can’t satisfy everybody.”

What made the transformation physically demanding?

In a 2018 India Today interview, Suresh described the prosthetics as restrictive: they limited her facial movement and made eating difficult. She said she knew the makeup process would take four hours and described the experience as irritating, damaging to her skin, and like wearing a mask. Those constraints mattered to a performance built partly on facial expression and screen mannerisms. India Today, 2018.

Costume counts should be read with their attribution intact. A 2017 PTI report quoted Suresh saying she had “more than a 100 costumes (changes)” for the film. In India Today, the interviewer asked about 120 costumes, but Suresh’s reply discussed the extensive costume work without independently confirming that exact number. PTI report via The Hindu, 2017.

Why did she hesitate before accepting the role?

Suresh said she initially doubted whether she could do justice to Savitri. She worried that imitating scenes associated with the celebrated actor might be received the wrong way. She credited Nag Ashwin with giving her confidence and called the film a tribute: “In fact, this film is like a tribute to actress Savitri.” India Today, 2018.

Mahanati is the Telugu title; the Tamil-language version is Nadigaiyar Thilagam. A 2017 PTI report described the project as a Telugu-Tamil bilingual directed by Nag Ashwin. PTI report via The Hindu, 2017.

What does “Mahanati has spoilt her” mean?

The phrase comes from the headline of Archana Nathan’s Scroll interview, published May 24, 2018. Its indexed description says the film put a woman at the center of a project, a new experience for Suresh. The original page is unavailable here, so the headline alone does not establish the exact words she used or whether “spoilt” was playful, critical, or shorthand.

Later, in the 2020 Cinema Express interview, Suresh said the film opened avenues for her to explore women-centered projects and made her reflect on her choices. That later account offers context for the headline without proving its precise meaning. Cinema Express, 2020.
