Her later credits include Roswell, New Mexico and Agent Revelation. In a 2021 interview, Ewell also described balancing acting and motherhood during the pandemic; those details offer a dated glimpse of her life then, not a verified account of her circumstances today.
Acting continued after The Vampire Diaries
Ewell’s career did not end with Vicki Donovan. Her work after the series included television roles and film projects, extending a screen career that had begun with earlier work on The Bold and the Beautiful. TV Insider lists later credits such as Roswell, New Mexico, Me and My Grandma and Agent Revelation, alongside other film and guest appearances. This is a selection of credits, not a complete filmography. TV Insider’s Kayla Ewell credits

Roswell, New Mexico
Ewell played Nora Truman in Roswell, New Mexico, connecting her post-Vampire Diaries work to another television series associated with creator Julie Plec. In a 2021 interview with 519 Magazine, Ewell described filming in Santa Fe during the pandemic. She and her husband traveled there for work, and nearby family helped with childcare for their young daughter. That account reflects the arrangements she described at the time, not her present-day routine. 519 Magazine’s 2021 interview with Kayla Ewell
Ewell said the pandemic had made the industry feel isolating in her experience: “It has become a completely different industry in my experience and it’s pretty isolating, you have to really love the art to continue to do it in this time.” Her comment captures the conditions she described while working on the series, rather than a general assessment of the industry today.

Comedy and film roles
Other credits include the comedy Me and My Grandma and the film Agent Revelation. Ewell called the comedy a learning experience and said comedy felt closer to her natural energy than dramatic work: “I love doing it so much more than drama, instead of crying your eyes out, you’re making people laugh.” For Agent Revelation, she said she developed experience with stunt work and combat fighting. These are her reflections in the 2021 interview, not a ranking of her roles.
TV Insider also lists projects including Sweet Sweet Summertime, The Creatress and Lethal Admirer, as well as guest roles. The range shows work across formats, but credits alone do not establish which projects were most significant to Ewell or how she would describe her career now. TV Insider’s Kayla Ewell credits

Podcasting added a different kind of work
Acting was not her only work beyond The Vampire Diaries. Ewell and Candice King, who played Caroline Forbes, made the podcast Directionally Challenged. In the 2021 interview, Ewell described it as a creative outlet during new motherhood. Apple lists Ewell as a host and shows an episode dated June 17, 2024; that listing establishes an episode on that date, but does not establish whether the podcast is currently producing new episodes. The show’s legacy includes lasting connections
Ewell described friendships with King and Michael Trevino, who played Tyler Lockwood, and spoke of maintaining a connection with Julie Plec through Roswell, New Mexico. In her account, The Vampire Diaries was not simply an earlier credit: it was also a source of professional relationships that continued beyond the series. That connection helps explain one way the show remained part of her working life, without suggesting it determined every later role.

What is known about her life outside work
Personal details should be read in the context of the interview date. In 2021, Ewell spoke about having a young daughter, Poppy, while working on Roswell, New Mexico, and said family support helped make the arrangement possible. She also discussed meeting her husband, actor Tanner Novlan, through a Sick Puppies music video. Ewell’s remark that “it really takes a village” was about balancing work and family in the circumstances she described then. The available sources do not establish her current family arrangements or day-to-day life.

The clearest difference is the variety of work Ewell described and pursued after the show: television roles, film parts and a podcast with a fellow cast member. Her 2021 account also offers a picture of the practical demands behind that work—travel, childcare and adapting to pandemic-era production. It is a dated snapshot, not a definitive update on her current career or personal life.
