Katy Perry said the first half of her “Woman’s World” video was intended as sarcastic, slapstick exaggeration—not straightforward empowerment imagery. She described the anvil scene as a reset into a different visual world tied to her idea of the “feminine divine.” Critics, however, argued that the sexualized construction-site scenes repeated the male-gaze conventions the video appeared to be mocking.
What Perry said the video was doing
In a behind-the-scenes clip from the shoot, Perry explained that the opening section was deliberately overplayed. Rolling Stone Australia quoted her saying: “We’re kind of just having fun being a bit sarcastic with it, it’s very slapstick, and very on the nose.”
She described the construction-site set as playing with a contradiction: “Oooh, we’re not about the male gaze but we really are about the male gaze,” she said, adding that the imagery was being “overplay[ed]” before she was “about to get smashed.” Perry called that moment “a reset” and said the video then moved into “a whole different world” representing her idea of the “feminine divine.”
She also captioned her behind-the-scenes post, “YOU CAN DO ANYTHING! EVEN SATIRE!” These comments are Perry’s explanation of her intent; they do not determine how the finished video must be interpreted.

Why the video drew criticism
The first half includes sexualized construction-site imagery, including a scene involving whiskey being poured over Perry and a faux-urinal sequence. Rolling Stone Australia summarized criticism that these visuals catered to the male gaze despite the video’s empowerment messaging, which the publication described as outdated.
The disagreement is about whether the exaggeration reads clearly on screen. Perry said the male-gaze imagery was intentionally pushed to an obvious, slapstick extreme. Critics argued that the same imagery could still reproduce the conventions it was meant to satirize. The video’s anvil-and-reset transition offers a stated dividing line between those visual worlds, but viewers may differ on whether the alternative imagery makes that critique legible.

What the later response shows—and does not show
A September 20, 2024 Associated Press review of Perry’s album 143 called the video a “sloppy, puzzling attempt at satire.” That is one critic’s assessment, not a measurement of audience opinion or proof that every viewer rejected Perry’s explanation. It does show that her account of the intent did not settle critical interpretation.
