On the September 4, 2024 episode of Call Her Daddy, Katy Perry said becoming a mother deepened the respect she already felt for her own mother and parents. She joked that she wondered how they had kept their children alive “without iPads,” then added that they had done the best they could with the tools and upbringings they had.
What Katy Perry said about her parents
Speaking with host Alex Cooper, Perry said: “After having my child, I always respected my mother, but the level of respect for my mother, my parents in general, it just went through the roof because I was like, how did you keep us alive without iPads?” The exchange appears at about 13:21 in a third-party transcript of the interview: Call Her Daddy: Katy Perry — Narcissists, Blow Jobs & Red Flags.

The iPad remark was a joke within a more reflective answer, not a criticism of her parents. Perry said they did the best they could with the tools they had and their own upbringing. She also praised her mother, saying, “And my mother, you know, she is a saint.”
Why the reflection carried weight
Before discussing the change in perspective, Perry recalled a volatile household and said money was its biggest source of stress. She described a family with three children and confirmed Cooper’s question about a strict Christian upbringing. Among the routines she remembered were regular church attendance and not being allowed to trick-or-treat. These are Perry’s recollections from the conversation.

She spoke about her mother’s sacrifices, including that her mother was often the last person to sit down at the dinner table. That context helps explain why Perry’s answer moved beyond a lighthearted comparison with raising children in the age of tablets: she was acknowledging the effort her parents made despite the circumstances they faced.
