What happened between Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom at the 2024 VMAs?
Bloom introduced Perry and presented her with the Video Vanguard Award. After performing a medley of songs from across her career, Perry ran to kiss him, then acknowledged him during her acceptance speech. E! reported her words: “Thank you to Orlando,” she said from the stage, “for keeping me grounded, celebrated and doing the dishes.” (E!; ELLE)
The sequence matters: the kiss came after the performance, before the speech, rather than during the acceptance remarks. The ceremony took place on September 11; some coverage appeared the following day.
Why did Perry thank him for doing the dishes?
E! connected the line to Perry’s September 4, 2024 appearance on the podcast Call Her Daddy. Speaking with host Alex Cooper, Perry described rewarding a partner who had cleaned the kitchen, done the dishes and closed the pantry doors. E! reproduced the punchline with its final word redacted: “If I come downstairs and the kitchen is clean, and you’ve done it all,” Katy told Alex Cooper, “and you’ve done all the dishes, and you’ve closed all the pantry doors, you better be ready to get your d–k sucked.” (E!)

That interview gives the dishes reference its context, but the available reporting does not establish that Perry explained the joke onstage. Her VMA line worked as a brief, playful thank-you; it is not evidence about the couple’s private household arrangements.
What did Bloom say when he presented the award?
Bloom’s introduction blended Perry’s public persona with a personal tribute. ELLE reproduced his line: “You fell in love with her as Katy Perry. I fell in love with her as Katheryn Hudson.” Hudson is Perry’s birth name. Bloom also spoke about her life as a mother and partner, and Perry mentioned their daughter, Daisy, in her acceptance speech. (ELLE)
