Katherine Díaz, integrante de la selección salvadoreña de surf, murió el 19 de marzo de 2021 después de ser alcanzada por un rayo mientras entrenaba en la playa El Tunco, en La Libertad. Tenía 22 años. La Federación Salvadoreña de Surf anunció su fallecimiento al día siguiente.
Qué ocurrió en la playa El Tunco
El incidente ocurrió durante un entrenamiento en El Tunco, una playa del departamento salvadoreño de La Libertad. Las crónicas publicadas entonces relacionaron el suceso con una tormenta que comenzaba. No se dispone aquí de un registro meteorológico oficial que permita precisar las condiciones en la playa o qué alertas, si las hubo, estaban disponibles en ese momento.
Los relatos difieren sobre si Díaz se dirigía al mar o salía de él cuando fue alcanzada. ESPN, que atribuyó esa descripción a Milton Flores, gerente administrativo de la Federación Salvadoreña de Surf, informó que ingresaba al agua; El País, citando medios locales, dijo que salía. Por eso, lo que puede afirmarse sin elegir entre versiones es que el impacto ocurrió durante su entrenamiento, en la zona de acceso al mar.
Quién era Katherine Díaz
Díaz tenía 22 años y formaba parte de la selección nacional de surf de El Salvador. La cobertura contemporánea señaló que se preparaba para competir internacionalmente, aunque los reportes no identificaron de manera uniforme el evento concreto. No hay base suficiente en estas fuentes para atribuirle una clasificación olímpica específica.

Cuándo se confirmó su muerte
Díaz fue alcanzada por el rayo el viernes 19 de marzo de 2021. La Federación Salvadoreña de Surf anunció su muerte el sábado 20 de marzo, según informó ESPN Deportes. Al describir lo sucedido, Flores lo calificó como “algo repentino y fulminante”, en palabras reproducidas por ESPN.
