In August 2022, radio presenter and actor Kate Ritchie was reported arrested after a random breath test in Sydney and fined for low-range drink-driving. Contemporaneous coverage put the fine at $600 and the licence suspension at three months. Those are reported details of the 2022 case, not today’s NSW penalty guidance.
What was reported about the August 2022 incident?
7NEWS reported on 28 August 2022 that Eastern Beaches Police Area Command officers stopped Ritchie during mobile random breath testing on Heffron Road in Pagewood shortly before 2:45 p.m. on Monday, 22 August. The report said she was driving a blue Subaru station wagon, that a roadside test was positive, and that she was arrested and taken to Maroubra Police Station.
According to the same report, a secondary breath analysis there allegedly returned 0.06. 7NEWS said Ritchie was fined for driving with a low-range prescribed concentration of alcohol and her licence was suspended. PerthNow’s contemporaneous account gave the fine as $600 and the suspension as three months. These are media reports of the specific 2022 outcome; no later court hearing or disposition is established here.
What did Kate Ritchie say?
In a statement reproduced by 7NEWS on 29 August 2022, Ritchie said: “Recently I undertook a random breath test. Although it was low level, the test came back positive. I made a poor decision and there is no doubt I understand the seriousness of my actions. I am truly sorry.”

How did NOVA Entertainment respond?
Now To Love reported on 29 August 2022 that NOVA Entertainment said it had “no plans for any changes to the Kate, Tim & Joel drive show or Kate’s role within the show.” The outlet also reported that the network described Ritchie’s absence as planned leave. This was the broadcaster’s response at the time and does not establish her current role or the show’s present lineup.
How does the reported fine compare with current NSW guidance?
| Measure | Reported 2022 case | Current NSW guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Fine | $600, reported by PerthNow for Ritchie’s case in August 2022 | $722 penalty-notice fine for a first low-range offence, according to NSW Government guidance checked 8 October 2026 |
| Licence consequence | Three-month suspension, reported by PerthNow for the 2022 case | A first offence can involve a three-month licence suspension, according to NSW Government guidance |
| What the figures describe | A media-reported historical case outcome | General current penalty-notice guidance, separate from court-imposed maximum penalties and disqualification periods |
The comparison is not evidence that the same fine was imposed under current rules or that the 2022 case proceeded to a later court outcome. Penalty amounts and rules can change; consult the NSW Government’s drink and drug driving penalties guidance for current information.

What does 0.05 mean in NSW?
NSW Government guidance says 0.05 is the general legal blood alcohol concentration limit for most fully licensed drivers. Some licence categories have lower limits, so 0.05 is not the applicable limit for every driver. The reported 0.06 reading in Ritchie’s case is an alleged case detail from 7NEWS, not an independent confirmation or a general measure of drink-driving cases. See the NSW Government’s alcohol limits guidance for the categories and rules.

The contemporaneous reports describe the police stop, alleged breath-analysis result, reported fine and suspension, Ritchie’s apology, and NOVA Entertainment’s response in August 2022. The cited coverage does not establish a later court hearing or disposition, and the broadcaster’s 2022 comment should not be read as a current employment update.
