Kate Middleton’s “new” tiara is Queen Victoria’s Oriental Circlet, a royal heirloom created in 1853—not a newly made jewel. Catherine, Princess of Wales, wore it publicly for the first time at a state banquet at Windsor Castle on 3 December 2025. Garrard says it was originally set with 2,600 diamonds alongside opals; that figure describes its original setting, not a verified count of the stones in the tiara today.
What is Kate Middleton’s new tiara called?
It is the Oriental Circlet, made for Queen Victoria by Garrard under Prince Albert’s direction. The jeweller dates its creation to 1853 and describes a design featuring lotus flowers and Mughal-inspired arches. Calling it “new” refers to Catherine’s first known wear, not the age of the tiara. How many diamonds does the Oriental Circlet have?
Garrard says the circlet was originally set with 2,600 diamonds and opals. The number is an original-setting count: the available account does not independently inventory how many diamonds remain after later changes. It is therefore more precise to say it was “originally set with 2,600 diamonds” than to present 2,600 as a confirmed current count.
Why were the opals replaced with rubies?
Queen Alexandra inherited the tiara in 1901 and had its opals replaced with rubies. According to Garrard, she believed opals were unlucky. The jeweller also says some arches were removed to make the circlet smaller. These changes mean Catherine’s tiara is not in its original gemstone configuration.

When did Catherine first wear the Oriental Circlet?
Catherine first wore it on 3 December 2025, at the state banquet held at Windsor Castle during the German state visit. The banquet honoured German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Elke Büdenbender. Vogue’s report from the event describes Catherine in a blue cape gown by Jenny Packham. Vogue’s coverage of the banquet identifies the occasion as her first wear of the tiara.
Which royal figures have worn or inherited it?
Garrard traces the circlet’s royal custody from Queen Victoria to Queen Alexandra, who inherited it in 1901. It passed to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, in 1936, then to Queen Elizabeth II in 2002. Garrard says Elizabeth II wore it once, during a visit to Malta in 2005. Catherine’s appearance in 2025 brought the historic piece back into public view, without establishing a complete record of every occasion on which it may have been worn.

The circlet’s repeating lotus flowers and arched forms give it a profile distinct from the more familiar pointed or floral tiara shapes. Garrard characterizes the design as Indian-inspired and its arches as Mughal-inspired. Those descriptions are the maker’s account of the design, rather than a claim that the style has a single uncontested classification.
