Kate Middleton studied History of Art at the University of St Andrews from 2001 to 2005, graduating with a 2:1. The Royal Family’s biography also records that she played hockey for the university team and first met Prince William while they were both studying there. Some popular stories about why she chose St Andrews or how their romance began are less firmly documented.
Where did Kate Middleton go to college?
Middleton enrolled at the University of St Andrews in Fife, Scotland, in 2001. She graduated in 2005. The Royal Family’s biography gives those dates and identifies St Andrews as the place where she first met Prince William: The Princess of Wales.

She studied History of Art and graduated with a 2:1, a UK undergraduate degree classification. The University of St Andrews’ retrospective also identifies her as a History of Art graduate from 2005: Royal visit to St Andrews.

Hockey and campus
The Royal Family biography says Middleton continued playing hockey for the university team while studying at St Andrews. During a 2021 return to the university, she recalled attending Art History lectures and admiring the view from what is now University House, according to the university’s retrospective.

A reported first-year dancing anecdote
The same retrospective recounts student association president Dan Marshall’s later memory that Middleton had mentioned trying dancing in her first year. This is Marshall recalling what she told him, not a direct recorded interview with Middleton.
Her reported answer about university
The Standard, republishing a Mirror report, attributes this answer to an archived item in the student newspaper The Saint: “To get an overall education in all aspects of life.” The quote is available through that later report rather than a directly accessible copy of the original item: The Standard’s report.

How did Kate Middleton meet Prince William?
The Royal Family biography says they first met while studying at St Andrews. The Associated Press reports that they were friends and housemates at first, and that their relationship came into public view after they were photographed together on a skiing holiday in Switzerland in 2004: Associated Press account.
Accounts that Middleton chose St Andrews specifically to meet William, or that a student fashion show sparked their romance, should be treated as reported claims rather than established facts. ABC News quotes a royal historian making the claim about her motive and presents the fashion-show story as an account; the official biography confirms where they met but does not verify either explanation: ABC News report.

What Prince William said about his own St Andrews years
In the university’s 2021 retrospective, William described his experience this way: “I spent four very happy and formative years studying in St Andrews. The town and the students left me alone to get on with student life, allowing me to share their freedoms – and their pubs.” This is his account of his student years, not Middleton’s.
