What happened at the 2025 royal Christmas lunch?
The Wales family attended the private pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, December 16, 2025. Vogue reported that Kate, William and their three children—George, Charlotte and Louis—were present. The lunch is a family gathering ahead of Christmas, not the Christmas Day celebration at Sandringham.

Why is their return notable?
The couple did not attend the Palace lunch in 2024. ITV reported on December 19 that they were already in Norfolk, as planned, and were looking forward to spending Christmas with the family at Sandringham. ITV attributed that explanation to an unnamed royal source; its account does not establish a personal motive or family disagreement.
The two occasions are distinct: the Buckingham Palace lunch is for senior royals and wider family who will not attend the King’s Christmas celebrations at his Norfolk home, while Sandringham is the traditional setting for the family’s Christmas and New Year. The Royal Family’s official Christmas background page describes the tradition of attending the Christmas morning service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham.
