Kat Abughazaleh announced a Democratic campaign for Illinois’s 9th Congressional District on March 24, 2025. The headline’s reference to Elon Musk points to his reported “Karma is real” comment after she was laid off from Media Matters in 2024—not to a business relationship or a campaign centered only on Musk. Abughazaleh’s bid has since concluded: Associated Press reported that Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss edged her out in the March 17, 2026 Democratic primary.
Who is Kat Abughazaleh?
Abughazaleh was a 26-year-old social-media creator when she announced her campaign. Before running for office, she worked at Media Matters as an extremism researcher and video producer. In its March 25, 2025 report, TechCrunch described her work and the circumstances of her departure: she was laid off in 2024, and Musk responded to news of the layoff with “Karma is real.”
That episode helps explain the “target of Musk’s ire” framing. Abughazaleh also presented her run as a response to broader concerns about political power, democratic rights and the Democratic Party’s direction—not simply as a personal dispute with Musk.
Why did she run for Congress?
Abughazaleh said she wanted people to be able to afford basic needs and still have money left over. Her announcement named housing, groceries and healthcare, alongside free childcare, expanded Social Security and rights that do not depend on who holds power. These were her stated priorities, not an assessment of how a particular proposal would work or whether it could pass.

Explaining why she chose to act then, she told TechCrunch reporter Amanda Silberling on March 24, 2025: “I have ideas that I want to push, and I have a big [social media] platform. I felt I didn’t want to wait around for someone to do something when I could do something right now.”
She also linked her experience in journalism and disinformation research to a wider political concern. “A lot of people in journalism, especially on this disinformation beat, have been going through kind of a trial period, or a practice run, a dry run of what Trump and Musk have been doing to the rest of the country,” she told TechCrunch.

How did she use social media in the campaign?
Social platforms were both an audience and a campaign channel. TechCrunch reported in March 2025 that Abughazaleh had more than half a million followers across platforms, including 222,000 on TikTok and about 154,000 on Bluesky. Those are publication-time snapshots, not current follower counts.
She planned to prioritize Bluesky rather than center X. Her campaign announcement appeared on Bluesky first, about an hour and a half before it was posted elsewhere, according to TechCrunch. The early launch gave her direct access to an existing audience while making the choice of platform part of the campaign’s public positioning.

Later, in a February 25, 2026 campaign release, Kat for Illinois said it had raised more than $600,000 since the start of that year, bringing its stated total above $3.1 million, with nearly 60,000 individual contributors, including more than 9,000 Illinois donors.
