Her career also includes film and television acting, founding the children’s storytelling nonprofit Sweet Blackberry, producing its films, and writing books for young readers.
Acting: the role that made her widely known
Parsons’s best-known acting role is Hilary Banks, the sharp, stylish eldest Banks sibling on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Her official biography dates her run on the NBC sitcom from 1990 through 1996. The show became the public starting point for a career that would extend well beyond a single character.
Her official site also lists the 1995 film Major Payne and the television series The Job among her acting credits. Parsons has described continuing to act after Fresh Prince, while also producing and writing; her career is better understood as an expansion into new work than as a complete departure from acting.
Sweet Blackberry: bringing overlooked Black history to children
In 2005, Parsons founded Sweet Blackberry as a nonprofit project to share lesser-known stories of Black achievement with children. The project tells these stories through animated films and books, celebrating people whose accomplishments are less widely known. Parsons writes and produces films for Sweet Blackberry and writes books for the project.

Sweet Blackberry describes its approach this way: “Through this lens, we tell stories that inspire, educate, and entertain.” Its official site describes the project as an award-winning series and says its films have screened on HBO and Netflix. Those screenings are historical distribution information, not confirmation that the films are currently available on either service.
