Karrueche Tran won the 2021 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actress in a Daytime Fiction Program for playing Vivian Johnson-Garrett in The Bay. The Television Academy later called her the first Asian-American Pacific Islander winner in that lead-actress category—a milestone specific to the category, not a claim about every Emmy category.
What Karrueche Tran won for
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) listed Tran as the winner of Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actress in a Daytime Fiction Program for her portrayal of Vivian Johnson-Garrett in The Bay. The official 2021 Daytime Emmy Fiction and Lifestyle winners list names The Bay and its producer, Popstar! TV.
What made the win historic
In a 2022 profile, the Television Academy described Tran as the first Asian-American Pacific Islander to win in the Daytime Emmy lead-actress category. The distinction matters: it is a first in that category, not a claim that Tran was the first AAPI person to win any Emmy. The profile also notes that Tran was a cast member and producer on The Bay, and had previously collected three Daytime Emmys as a producer for the web series. Those producer awards are separate from her 2021 acting win.
Tran told the Television Academy, “I was blown away.” She also said, “But I take pride in that award, and I want to make sure I’m fulfilling the title of it.” Reflecting on the effect of the recognition, she said, “The Emmy pushed me even harder to perfect my craft” and “I’m going to work on getting better.” These comments appeared in Mara Reinstein’s November 28, 2022 profile of Tran.
