What Conan O’Brien said to Karla Sofía Gascón
O’Brien’s opening monologue included two connected jokes. First, he referenced Anora’s reported use of profanity and compared it with a supposed record set by Gascón’s publicist. ABC News quoted him saying that the film used the f-word 479 times, “three more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist.” The Los Angeles Times reported the comparison as “four more,” while TheWrap described the line without a number. The differing accounts mean the comparison count should not be treated as settled.

O’Brien then addressed Gascón directly: “Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars, remember, my name is Jimmy Kimmel.” The gag substituted the name of fellow late-night host and former Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel for O’Brien’s own.
Why the joke referred to her tweets
The line came amid awards-season controversy after Gascón’s past social-media posts resurfaced. ABC News reported that she had apologized to people she had hurt. That was the context for O’Brien’s reference to tweeting; it does not establish that everyone in the audience reacted alike.

Coverage described different aspects of the room’s response: TheWrap reported an audible wave of “oohs,” while the Los Angeles Times said the two lines scored with the audience. Those are the outlets’ characterizations of the moment.

In wording attributed to an Instagram post, Gascón thanked the Academy for her lead-actress nomination and invitation, said she found the gala enjoyable and entertaining, and praised its “fabulous presenter Jimmy Kimmel.” She added that he looked more like the great Conan O’Brien every day. The Spanish text was reproduced by La Opinión and EL ESPECTADOR; the underlying Instagram post was not independently retrieved by those accounts.

Her response echoed O’Brien’s mistaken-name punchline, turning “Jimmy Kimmel” into a playful callback. It is best understood as a continuation of the joke rather than a separate explanation of her intent.
