Karl Jordan Jr., who was found guilty in 2024 of murdering Run-DMC DJ Jam Master Jay, was acquitted of the murder charges on December 19, 2025. The judge found the evidence did not sufficiently establish that Jordan shared the narcotics-related motive prosecutors attributed to the killing. Co-defendant Ronald Washington’s conviction remained in place.
Why was Karl Jordan acquitted?
U.S. District Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall ruled that the evidence did not adequately connect Jordan to the narcotics-related motive underlying the murder charges. Reporting on the decision said the evidence supported Washington’s resentment over a failed Baltimore drug transaction, but that the claim Jordan shared that motive was conjecture. The ruling therefore turned on the proof connecting Jordan to the alleged motive, not on a new jury verdict declaring him innocent. Associated Press reporting republished by NY1, December 19, 2025.

What happened to the 2024 verdict?
A jury found Jordan and Washington guilty in February 2024. In December 2025, the judge granted Jordan an acquittal on the murder charges while leaving Washington’s conviction intact. The two defendants therefore had different outcomes after the same trial: Jordan’s murder conviction was set aside, and Washington’s was upheld. Was Jordan released?
Not automatically. The murder acquittal did not resolve Jordan’s separate drug charges. On April 6, 2026, a judge granted him a $1 million bond, but prosecutors were appealing both the acquittal and bond rulings, according to Associated Press reporting republished by NBC New York. That report describes the status at the time; later appellate or custody developments are not established here.

Where does Jay Bryant fit in the case?
Jay Bryant is a separate participant, not one of the two men whose 2024 jury convictions were addressed in the December 2025 ruling. In April 2026, Bryant pleaded guilty as an accomplice to the firearm-related murder, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. His plea does not change the distinction between Jordan’s acquittal and Washington’s upheld conviction.
