Bully is a frustrating near-miss: Kanye West still knows how to build a striking sound, but too many songs feel like fragments, and the album’s attempts at self-examination rarely become specific enough to land. It has moments worth hearing; it does not quite make a convincing return.
When did Bully come out, and what is on it?
Apple Music lists BULLY as a hip-hop/rap album released March 28, 2026, with 18 songs and a 42-minute runtime. Pitchfork reported that it arrived on streaming services March 27, following a Los Angeles listening event; those are different records of the release, so the date depends on whether you mean the platform listing or the reported streaming arrival. Apple Music’s album listing provides the platform metadata, while Pitchfork’s release report covers the rollout.
What does Bully sound like?
The album’s most appealing quality is how readily it moves between recognizable Ye modes. Apple Music’s editorial description points to electronic, prog-rock scale on “KING,” chopped soul on “PUNCH DRUNK,” and trap-informed production on “THIS A MUST.” Those are useful signposts for the palette: grand electronics, sample-driven warmth, and contemporary low-end sit alongside one another. Apple Music also identifies contributions from Travis Scott, Don Toliver, CeeLo Green, and other guests.
That variety is not the same as reinvention. Pitchfork hears echoes of 808s & Heartbreak, Yeezus, and Graduation, as well as polished sample work. The references can be pleasurable—the album knows which colors made earlier Ye records feel distinctive—but they also make Bully sound like it is revisiting a vocabulary rather than developing a new one. The strongest moments suggest what the record might have been; the less convincing ones lean on familiar textures without giving them a fresh purpose. Pitchfork’s review makes that tension central to its assessment.

Why does the album feel unfinished?
At 18 tracks and 42 minutes by Apple Music’s count, Bully is not especially long, yet its brevity often works against it. Pitchfork notes that many of the newer songs barely exceed two minutes and describes much of the material as slight or repetitive. A short track can feel taut when it has a clear idea and an ending that changes how you hear it. Here, several songs seem to stop before their ideas have had time to deepen, making the album’s promising sounds feel closer to sketches than fully shaped songs.
The same incompleteness affects the record’s emotional center. Bully gestures toward redemption and reflection, but Pitchfork argues that the writing stays vague and that samples sometimes stand in for emotional development. That is the album’s most consequential missed opportunity: its soulful and grand gestures imply a personal reckoning, while the lyrics do not consistently make that reckoning concrete. “Beauty and the Beast” and “All the Love” are among the tracks Pitchfork identifies as promising, but promise is not the same as a coherent arc across the album.

Does Bully use AI?
The public statements and later allegation should not be mistaken for a settled answer about how the released record was made. Pitchfork reported that West posted a 13-song list on March 25, 2026, with the caption “BULLY ON THE WAY NO AI.” The caption is West’s claim, not independent verification of the production process. Pitchfork also recounted his earlier comments about using AI in his writing and recording workflow, including his description of it as “a tool, not a replacement,” quoted from an interview with Justin Laboy. Pitchfork’s reporting gives the context for both statements.
In August 2026, MusicRadar reported that a producer sued, alleging AI vocal production on Bully and unpaid work. That is a plaintiff’s allegation, not proof that AI vocals appear on the released album; the reporting cited here does not independently establish that through audio analysis. MusicRadar’s account of the lawsuit describes the claim.

Does the public context change the listening?
It can shape expectations, particularly for an album framed around reflection and redemption, but it cannot answer whether the music earns those themes. Pitchfork’s release coverage recaps West’s apology advertisement and earlier public statements; The Atlantic described the initial response as mixed, with some fans welcoming a return to soulful sounds. Those accounts help explain the atmosphere around the release, not the quality of the songs themselves. The Atlantic’s response coverage records that initial reception.
On the record, the more useful test is whether musical invention, songcraft, and candor reinforce one another. Bully has enough of the first to keep it engaging, but short arrangements weaken the second and hazy writing limits the third. The result is more compelling as a glimpse of familiar strengths than as a fully persuasive comeback.
