Who was Kamini Kaushal?
Kaushal was an Indian actress whose screen career spanned from the postwar period into the 21st century. PTI reports that she was born Uma Kashyap in Lahore on 24 February 1927. While studying English literature there, she was cast by filmmaker Chetan Anand in Neecha Nagar; she later adopted the screen name Kamini Kaushal.
In a recollection from a 1998 Filmfare interview, quoted by PTI, Kaushal said: “I asked him to give me a name beginning with ‘K’ to match with the names of my daughters Kumkum and Kavita”. She died in Mumbai on 13 November 2025, aged 98, according to PTI.
What was Kamini Kaushal’s first film?
Her first film was Neecha Nagar, directed by Chetan Anand and released in 1946. The Festival de Cannes archive identifies it as an Indian feature and records its award as “Grand Prix 1946.” That recognition belongs to the film; it should not be described as an individual Cannes award for Kaushal.

Why is Biraj Bahu one of her notable performances?
In Bimal Roy’s Biraj Bahu (1954), Kaushal played the lead in an adaptation of a Bengali novel by Saratchandra Chattopadhyay. Retrospectives by Filmfare and Scroll identify the film as central to her acting legacy. Its significance in accounts of her career is personal and artistic acclaim, distinct from the Cannes award attached to Neecha Nagar.
