Kalindi is the English title of Shridhar V. Ketkar’s Marathi novel Brahmankanya, first published in 1930. In Shanta Gokhale’s translation, it follows a woman whose family history leaves her and her siblings caught between caste boundaries and social exclusion. The novel argues that women’s choices, education, work and relationships can unsettle caste—but its ending also invites questions about how far personal freedom can escape the structures around it.

What is Kalindi about?

The novel centers on Kalindi Dagge and the consequences of her family’s inter-caste history. Her father, Appasaheb, is a Brahmin who marries Shanta, a non-Brahmin woman whose own parentage falls outside conventional marriage. Although Appasaheb sees himself as a reformer, his children still face exclusion.

Kalindi’s constrained options lead her to leave home. In Mumbai, friendship and work help her begin to build a life on different terms. The story connects her personal circumstances to larger questions about caste, marriage, family standing and who is allowed to belong.

How does the novel connect caste and women’s freedom?

Caste is not simply the setting for Kalindi’s difficulties: it shapes marriage prospects, social status and family relationships. The novel also examines the ways patriarchy limits women’s lives through expectations around marriage, education and economic dependence. Its characters push against custom and religious authority in pursuit of personal freedom.

Translator Shanta Gokhale has described caste as the novel’s driving theme. In an interview with Githa Hariharan, she said: “The greatness of the novel lies in the sociological concerns of the author not being allowed, for the most part, to turn a story into a thesis.” Read the NewsClick interview with Shanta Gokhale.

The book also belongs to a wider debate about social reform: whether changing social relations should precede political independence, and how caste and women’s education figured in Maharashtra’s public life. Its attention to individual decisions does not erase that broader context. Rather, it shows how choices made within families and relationships can challenge custom while remaining shaped by it.

Does Kalindi imagine a way to dismantle caste?

One reading of the novel emphasizes friendship, empathy and support for people who live beyond conventional marriage roles. On this view, relationships built on mutual respect offer a practical challenge to caste boundaries and to the social rules that police women’s choices. Kalindi’s movement toward independent work matters because freedom requires more than a change in romantic circumstances.

But the novel’s reformist ambitions are not beyond criticism. A review in Feminism in India questions the limits of the ending, including the role of Brahmin men in the women’s eventual relationships. That reservation complicates any claim that the resolution fully breaks with caste and patriarchy: women may gain room to choose while the terms of that choice remain connected to existing power.

Read alongside the affirmative interpretation, this tension makes the novel more than a simple declaration that individual love or goodwill can undo caste. It asks readers to consider both the value of personal acts of solidarity and the limits of change when the surrounding social structure remains intact. Read the feminist review of Kalindi.
