The brief monologue takeover was a joke, not a change in who hosts the show.
What happened during Justin Timberlake’s monologue takeover?
At the top of the March 11, 2024 episode, Timberlake appeared without Kimmel and introduced himself as that night’s host. He pretended Kimmel was too worn out to make it after hosting the Oscars. People’s March 12, 2024 report, carried by Yahoo Entertainment, recounted the exchange and quoted Timberlake’s opening: “Hello, everyone. Welcome to Jimmy Kimmel Live!. I’m going to be your host tonight, Justin Timberlake,”

Kimmel then came onto the stage, said he was there, and asked why Timberlake thought the show needed a guest host. Timberlake blamed Kimmel’s supposed late night at an Oscar afterparty; Kimmel replied that he had gone to one party and then gone to bed. The joke hinged on the timing after the Oscars, rather than any actual absence or hosting change.
What was the joke about Timberlake’s planned monologue?
Timberlake said he had prepared a full monologue, including a mock presidential-debate rap battle in which he would impersonate Donald Trump and Joe Biden. People reported this excerpt from Timberlake: “I had a whole monologue planned. I was going to do a presidential debate rap battle where I play Trump and Biden. ‘You’re a loser.’ ‘Come on, man,’”

The exchange ended with a mutual bit of name-based flattery: Kimmel called Timberlake his favorite Justin, and Timberlake called Kimmel his second-favorite Jimmy. The quoted lines are selected excerpts reported by People, not a verified full transcript.
