In December 2024, he was sentenced to two years of probation. A documented professional consequence was the end of his partnership with Mpls.St.Paul Magazine’s Smoke Out festival, but available reporting does not establish that his reputation was permanently destroyed or measure the broader effect on his career.
What happened in the criminal case?
June 2024 incident and initial allegations
The case followed an incident in St. Paul on June 28, 2024. The Minnesota Star Tribune reported that the criminal complaint alleged a woman said Sutherland threatened her with a gun and choked her. Those were allegations in the complaint, not findings established at that point. In July, Sutherland declared himself innocent, and his attorney denied that he physically assaulted the woman, pointed a gun at her, or choked her. Minnesota Star Tribune, July 5, 2024

Guilty pleas and sentence
In October 2024, Sutherland pleaded guilty to a felony threats-of-violence count. The plea agreement called for a 360-day sentence to be set aside for two years of probation, along with 100 hours of community service, a chemical-dependency evaluation, and a firearms restriction; sentencing had not yet occurred when that agreement was reported. Minnesota Star Tribune, October 22, 2024
He also pleaded guilty to violating a domestic-abuse no-contact order. The court included that conviction in the December sentencing. On December 13, 2024, the court sentenced him to two years of probation, with conditions including abstaining from alcohol and drugs, counseling for domestic abuse and anger management, and avoiding firearms. The Star Tribune characterized the conviction as a gross misdemeanor because the sentence fell within that offense’s bounds. Minnesota Star Tribune, December 13, 2024

At sentencing, Sutherland apologized and described the incident as an “alcohol-fueled argument.” The Star Tribune reported his statement: “alcohol-fueled argument escalated into something that I deeply regret.”
What professional consequences were reported?
Smoke Out partnership ended
On July 5, 2024, Mpls.St.Paul Magazine said it had ended its partnership with Sutherland for its annual Smoke Out festival, a partnership that dated to 2018. The event continued under the name Northern Char. This is a specific reported professional consequence; it does not establish what every employer, viewer, or fan thought of Sutherland. Restaurant projects and prior profile
Before the case, Sutherland was known as a chef associated with the Handsome Hog and Big E, a Top Chef contestant, an Iron Chef America winner, and an Emmy recipient for the web series Taste the Culture. The Star Tribune reported that he had severed ties with the Handsome Hog and that restaurant projects planned for St. Paul and Minneapolis had been cancelled. Those reports describe his circumstances at the time; they do not confirm his current business or employment status. Minnesota Star Tribune, December 13, 2024 Minnesota Star Tribune, October 22, 2024

The documented record supports a criminal case outcome and identifiable professional fallout, including the festival partnership ending and restaurant plans reported cancelled. It does not quantify reputational damage, audience response, or the overall effect on his career, and it does not establish that the damage was permanent. “Destroyed his reputation” is therefore stronger than the available evidence can substantiate.
