The film ends with Zora and the surviving members of the group escaping the island. The one survival question the film leaves open concerns Duncan Kincaid, who draws the D-Rex away and then reappears alive, without the movie fully explaining how he got away.

What Zora’s mission is
Zora is a covert-operations expert hired to lead a mission to collect genetic material from three large creatures. Universal’s synopsis sets the story five years after Jurassic World Dominion, with surviving dinosaurs living in isolated equatorial environments. The mission is tied to a pharmaceutical company’s proposed heart-medication research, which the studio describes as a drug with benefits for humanity. That medicine is a fictional premise, not a real scientific claim about dinosaur DNA.
The Associated Press identifies the three target animals in the table below.

How the ending plays out
Zora’s team completes the mission to obtain three dinosaur samples. The groups then reunite at an abandoned settlement, where the danger escalates and everyone needs a way out.

The Delgado family finds a route through a drain and tunnel system that leads toward the ocean and a boat. The escape path, not any combat, is what gets the group to the water.
In the final sequence, Duncan draws the D-Rex away using a flare. The others are preparing to leave when Duncan is seen swimming back toward them. The film shows him alive and rejoining the group.

How Duncan gets away, and what the film leaves unexplained
The film does not clearly show how Duncan avoids the D-Rex. Only the outcome is on screen: he is alive and returns to the group.
Mahershala Ali, who plays Duncan, offered one possible explanation in an interview with CinemaBlend:

“I think he went… I think he distracted… The flare went out, and I think he went underwater and kind of like, you know, swam away very quickly.”
That is Ali’s interpretation, not a confirmed account from director Gareth Edwards or screenwriter David Koepp. According to the report, the cast had not settled on a definitive explanation with Edwards.

Readers should separate what is shown from what is inferred:
- Shown: Duncan draws the D-Rex away with a flare, and he returns alive.
- Inferred: That he went underwater to escape. This is the actor’s reading of the ambiguity.
- Not shown: Zora being attacked or eaten. The film does not show her dying.
What the ending means
The ending pays off Duncan’s willingness to protect the group. It resolves the immediate danger with an escape rather than with a death, which keeps the film’s focus on the group’s survival and on the cost of the mission.

The story also raises an ethical question: should a private pharmaceutical company control and profit from a potentially life-saving medicine, or should that knowledge be broadly accessible? That is a theme the film puts in front of the audience, not a claim about how such a drug would be made.
