What roles made June Lockhart famous?
Lockhart worked in theater, film, and television across a career that began in childhood. The Television Academy records her stage debut in 1933, film debut in 1938, and Broadway debut in 1947. She appeared with her actor parents, Gene and Kathleen Lockhart, in MGM’s A Christmas Carol, then went on to a broad range of screen and stage work.
Lassie and Lost in Space
Her best-known television roles were Ruth Martin on Lassie, from 1958 to 1964, and Maureen Robinson on Lost in Space, from 1965 to 1968, according to the AP. She later played Dr. Janet Craig on Petticoat Junction. Those credits explain her enduring public recognition, but the sources do not disclose her pay for the shows.

Film and stage work
Her film credits included Meet Me in St. Louis, Sergeant York, The Yearling, and She-Wolf of London, as well as All This, and Heaven Too. The Television Academy notes her 1947 Broadway debut in For Love or Money.
Accounts differ on the year of Lockhart’s Tony recognition: the Television Academy describes the award in connection with 1947, while the Hollywood Walk of Fame biography gives 1948 for the award for Outstanding Performance by a Newcomer. The Television Academy says the award was donated to the Smithsonian in 2008. Hollywood Walk of Fame biography
What the $5 million estimate does—and does not—tell you
The number answers what one entertainment site estimated, not what Lockhart’s finances were proven to be. The cited biographies document her career and accomplishments; they do not establish contract terms, total earnings, assets, debts, or how an estate was distributed. There is no basis in these sources for turning the estimate into a figure for career earnings, royalties, or estate proceeds.
Lockhart spoke about the gap between a performer’s public image and a person’s own perspective. In a 1994 interview quoted by the AP, she said: “I can control my reputation, but not my image, because my image is how you see me.” That reflection offers context about celebrity and public perception, not evidence for a financial valuation.
