Julianne Hough said Hayley Erbert’s life-threatening medical emergency helped her and her brother Derek put lingering issues into perspective and start fresh. In an August 2024 interview with People, she described the shift as a “clean slate.” She did not say what their earlier differences were, and the available reporting does not establish that the siblings had a public feud or estrangement.
What Julianne Hough said about her relationship with Derek
“Something happens and it just is like a clean slate,” Julianne said, as quoted in Us Weekly’s August 8, 2024 report on her interview with People. She said the crisis involving Derek’s wife, Hayley Erbert, made lingering family issues feel less important.
Julianne kept those issues general. Neither the report nor her quoted remarks identify specific disagreements, so “set aside differences” is best understood as a description of her perspective—not evidence of a documented feud or a particular falling-out.
What happened to Hayley Erbert
In December 2023, Erbert was hospitalized after a performance on Derek’s Symphony of Dance tour. Derek said she had a cranial hematoma after a burst blood vessel and needed emergency surgery, including a craniectomy. She underwent a second operation later that month to restore part of her skull, according to the same Us Weekly report.

News, Julianne described trying to support Derek and Erbert by handling practical matters while they focused on the crisis. “With their situation, being able to be a very stable force was needed — and I think appreciated — because I could get things done that they weren’t thinking about,” she said in E! News’ March 5, 2024 coverage.
How the family story developed afterward
Erbert returned to the tour with Derek in April 2024, according to the August account. Julianne’s comments about a clean slate came several months after her description of helping the couple through the immediate emergency; they reflect what she said the experience changed in her relationship with Derek.
