A wedding planned for June 14—and confused public messaging
Roberts and Sutherland were due to marry on June 14, 1991. As news broke shortly before the ceremony, reports described the wedding as called off, while publicists reportedly characterized the plans as postponed. The mismatch left the public status unclear even as the story spread. Contemporary coverage did not establish exactly when the couple privately made its decision or whether it was mutual at that point.

The Los Angeles Times described the episode as a media frenzy. The wedding’s imminent date, Roberts’s sudden travel, and the appearance of a familiar name in the reports made the story especially combustible.
Why Jason Patric became part of the story
In June, Roberts traveled to Ireland. The Los Angeles Times reported tabloid stories connecting her there with Patric, and the Deseret News also reported that she later traveled to Ireland with him. Those reports establish why Patric entered the public narrative: he was linked to Roberts during the aftermath of the wedding announcement, and he was Sutherland’s friend and fellow actor.

They do not, by themselves, establish the details of a romance. The Los Angeles Times framed accounts of kissing, secret meetings, and a hideaway as tabloid claims. They should not be treated as verified descriptions of what Roberts and Patric did or felt.
What the tabloids said—and what the evidence supports
Tabloid explanations for the breakup included allegations about Sutherland’s drinking and a reported fling. The contemporary Los Angeles Times account records those explanations as claims circulating in the press, not as proven causes. The available accounts do not settle why the engagement ended, whether any alleged conduct contributed, or how the private decision unfolded.
A later Associated Press report carried by CBS News summarized the earlier breakup and Patric connection, but a retrospective summary cannot turn the rumors into established fact. The firmest account is narrower: a wedding was scheduled, its public status shifted between “called off” and “postponed,” Roberts went to Ireland, and reporting linked her there with Patric.
How Roberts, Sutherland, and Patric later described it
Later comments offer perspective, not a definitive private chronology. A 2016 Yahoo Entertainment report attributed to Sutherland the view that Roberts “had the courage” to end the engagement. The phrase is reported as a fragment in the headline, so it is best understood as a summary of his retrospective view rather than a complete quotation.

In a separate 2016 retrospective, Yahoo Entertainment quoted Patric recalling a 2011 interview: “They had a relationship that ended, and I was with her for a little while and it ended.” His words acknowledge that he was with Roberts for a time after her relationship with Sutherland ended, but they do not specify the exact dates or resolve the contemporary press’s claims about the breakup.

The label compresses several different kinds of evidence into one dramatic story. The scheduled wedding and the public confusion over its status were reported at the time; the Ireland trip and Patric’s presence in the coverage were also reported. The more intimate explanations—what caused the engagement to end and what precisely happened between Roberts and Patric—largely came through tabloid accounts and remain unverified in these cited sources.

That distinction matters: the triangle is most securely understood as a media narrative built around a canceled wedding and a reported Ireland trip, not as a fully documented account of the three actors’ private relationships.
