Their connection was linked to the film The Player, though Lovett later said they had met only a few weeks before the wedding.
1992: A connection through The Player
Contemporary wedding coverage connected Roberts and Lovett through Robert Altman’s film The Player. But the familiar account that they had known each other since filming is misleading: in a July 1993 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Lovett said they had personally met only a few weeks before they married. The film was the reported connection; their acquaintance before the wedding was brief.

June 27, 1993: They marry in Marion, Indiana
Roberts and Lovett wed at St. James Lutheran Church in Marion, Indiana. The Associated Press described it as a hastily arranged ceremony planned in two days, with 75 guests. It was the first marriage for both. Roberts married during a three-day break from filming The Pelican Brief.
The date is sometimes given as June 25 in later biographical summaries. Two contemporary reports place the wedding on June 27, and the AP account identifies it as a Sunday, so June 27 is the date supported by the contemporaneous coverage.
