What is happening when Gojo says it?
Gojo makes the declaration during his rematch with Toji, after Toji has nearly killed him. Gojo has awakened to a deeper mastery of his abilities, and the scene presents him as exhilarated by that transformation. He tells Toji that he cannot feel hatred or anger; the words “Throughout heaven and earth, I alone am the honored one” express his sense that he has crossed into a level of power apart from everyone around him.

That context matters: the line is not a detached explanation of Gojo’s personality. It is spoken at a moment of extreme change, when he recognizes what his newfound mastery means. It can sound arrogant because it is a declaration of superiority, but the scene also gives it an ecstatic, almost transcendent tone.
What does “Throughout heaven and earth, I alone am the honored one” mean?
The Japanese phrase is 天上天下唯我独尊 (tenjō tenga yuiga dokuson). In this context, its English rendering conveys Gojo’s conviction that he stands alone at the pinnacle. The line captures both his confidence in his power and the altered, exhilarated state in which he speaks.

Is Gojo quoting Buddha?
The expression is widely associated in secondary coverage with Buddhist tradition, which helps explain its religious or enlightened-sounding register. That association is not the same as proof that Gojo is quoting a particular scripture verbatim, or that creator Gege Akutami confirmed a specific religious meaning. No direct author statement or primary religious-text source establishing that precise intention or quotation has been verified. It is safest to describe the Buddhist connection as an interpretive resonance, not a confirmed explanation.
