Manga spoiler: Toji Fushiguro’s mouth scar is tied to the abuse he suffered as a child in the Zenin clan. Secondary summaries of the manga say he was thrown into a pit of cursed spirits and injured there. The scar remained into adulthood. The original chapter is the best place to check the scene; the available summaries do not firmly identify who put him in the pit.
How did Toji get his scar?
The scar is part of Toji’s history of mistreatment by the Zenin clan. Secondary accounts of the manga describe him being thrown into a pit of cursed spirits as a child, where he was hurt. His mouth scar is the lasting mark associated with that abuse. Freedom251’s scar summary and Anime Explained’s character account both report the pit explanation.
What the account does—and does not—establish
- Established in the summaries: the scar is connected to childhood abuse within the Zenin clan, with the pit of cursed spirits given as the source of the injury.
- Not established by the surfaced material: the identity of a specific person who threw Toji into the pit. Avoid naming a perpetrator or adding details about the incident that the source does not confirm.
- Not supported: claims that the scar came from a particular later battle or was inflicted by a named character.
Where to check the manga scene
VIZ lists chapter 138 of Jujutsu Kaisen, published February 21, 2021. The listing identifies the official chapter, but its page description does not itself explain the scar; consult the chapter for the scene rather than relying on a quoted line or an attributed creator statement. VIZ’s series catalog lists official manga and related books. It also lists Jujutsu Kaisen: The Official Character Guide, released April 23, 2024, as a book with profiles of major characters; its listing does not confirm a scar-specific explanation.
Is the scar’s origin explained in the anime?
This answer concerns Toji’s manga backstory. The official anime’s story and character pages provide franchise information, but the surfaced page material does not state how he got the scar. Anime-only viewers should treat the explanation above as a manga spoiler.
