Spoilers for the Hidden Inventory / Premature Death story and the later Shinjuku confrontation. Gojo and Geto become enemies not because one moment erases their friendship, but because the loss surrounding Riko Amanai lands differently for each of them, while mounting strain and incompatible convictions pull them toward opposing choices. Riko’s death is a catalyst; Geto’s turn grows from a wider accumulation of pressure.
How Gojo and Geto’s friendship begins
In the Hidden Inventory / Premature Death story, Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto are close classmates. Their banter and shared confidence make their school days feel bright and enjoyable, which gives their eventual separation its emotional force. The official anime introduction describes a world where negative human emotions give rise to curses and jujutsu sorcerers exorcise them; Gojo and Geto begin as young sorcerers working within that world together (official anime series introduction).

Season 2 director Shota Goshozono described the adaptation as moving from the pair’s “bright and fun youthful days” to Riko’s death and their drifting apart. That contrast is a production perspective on why the turn feels so painful, not a definitive authorial explanation of every motive (ORICON interview with the Season 2 director and producer).
What changes after Riko Amanai dies?
Riko’s death confronts both sorcerers with loss, but they do not process it alike. Gojo recognizes the limits of strength: even extraordinary power cannot ensure that everyone will be protected. Voice actor Yuichi Nakamura, discussing his interpretation of Gojo, said Geto could not set the loss aside in the same way and that Gojo failed to notice how heavily it affected him. This is Nakamura’s reading of the characters, not a statement attributed to manga creator Gege Akutami (ORICON interview with Yuichi Nakamura).

That distinction matters when asking, “Why did Geto change after Riko died?” The death is a major turning point, but it does not alone explain his later decision. Goshozono characterized Geto’s fall as the result of years of built-up stress in jujutsu society, with Geto’s own stress reaching a breaking point. In this account, the loss is part of a longer trajectory rather than a single cause.
Why do Gojo and Geto become enemies?
As their experiences and beliefs diverge, they reach incompatible conclusions about how to respond to the jujutsu world and the burdens of sorcery. Geto ultimately acts on convictions that take him onto a path opposed to Gojo’s. Nakamura cautioned against treating that rift as Geto simply rejecting Gojo: “It’s not that Geto outright denies Gojo; he simply begins to act in accordance with his own convictions.”

That does not make their choices morally equivalent. It clarifies the emotional shape of the conflict: a close bond persists in the history between them even as their conduct and chosen sides become irreconcilable. Gojo’s failure to recognize how deeply Geto is affected helps explain the distance, but it is not the whole cause; the accumulated strain and Geto’s developing convictions also matter.

Their Shinjuku confrontation carries the weight of the friendship that preceded it. Nakamura said he initially planned to deliver Gojo’s opening lines with raw emotion, as if Gojo were saying, “I don’t understand what you’ve done.” During the test take, he was advised to play the scene as though Gojo had come to hear Geto out. The exchange then becomes heated. That performance account offers a useful lens on the scene: Gojo’s approach contains a desire to listen, even though the conflict between them cannot be set aside.

Why the rivalry feels personal and ideological
- Personal history: They were close classmates, so their separation is not a clash between strangers.
- Different responses to loss: Nakamura reads Geto as bearing Riko’s death more heavily, while Gojo does not initially perceive that difference.
- Accumulated pressure: Goshozono describes Geto’s turn as emerging from years of stress in jujutsu society, not from Riko’s death alone.
- Different choices: Their convictions lead them to opposing paths, turning an intimate bond into a consequential conflict.
