Chapter 259 delivers one of Sukuna’s most devastating attacks yet: Divine Flame, also rendered in some translations and fan discussions as Furnace or Kamino. By combining the fire technique with Malevolent Shrine, a binding vow, and altered domain conditions, Sukuna turns the battlefield into a mass-destruction zone. Yuji survives only because Choso shields him with his own body—and the chapter then brings Aoi Todo back into the fight.
Yuji continues learning Blood Manipulation
The chapter begins with training rather than an immediate attack. Yuji is still trying to understand Convergence, the Blood Manipulation technique that compresses blood into a projectile or another controlled form.

Choso attempts to teach him, but his explanation of the fundamentals is not especially clear. Noritoshi Kamo steps in with a more accessible explanation, giving Yuji a better chance of understanding how the technique works. The exchange provides a brief comic pause, but it also reinforces the urgency of the situation: Yuji and the remaining sorcerers are attempting to master every available resource while Sukuna’s battle reaches its decisive stage.
It also continues the chapter’s emphasis on brotherhood. Choso is not merely helping Yuji develop a new combat technique; he is trying, imperfectly, to guide the younger brother he has chosen to protect.
Sukuna turns Malevolent Shrine into a furnace
The chapter’s central action is Sukuna’s activation of Divine Flame. The attack is not presented as an ordinary fire arrow or a simple long-range blast. Its destructive potential depends on the environment created by Malevolent Shrine.
Sukuna uses a binding vow and changes the conditions of his domain’s barrier. The result allows combustible material to be distributed throughout the domain before being ignited. When Divine Flame is released, the accumulated material produces an enormous explosion involving intense heat, decompression, and overpressure. In practical terms, Malevolent Shrine becomes a sealed area of devastation rather than merely the setting for Sukuna’s slashing attacks.

Sukuna’s fire technique is already dangerous, but Chapter 259 reveals a domain-enhanced application designed to annihilate everyone caught inside the affected area. It behaves more like a thermobaric blast than a conventional projectile: the domain creates the conditions that let the ignition produce overwhelming heat and pressure across the battlefield.

Uraume regards the attack as decisive. Kinji Hakari, meanwhile, remains separated from the main confrontation, leaving the other fighters to face the consequences of Sukuna’s technique alone.
Divine Flame devastates Shinjuku
Once Sukuna releases the attack, a massive pillar of fire consumes the battlefield. The scale of the destruction is the payoff to the binding vow and the altered barrier conditions. This is not simply Sukuna firing a hotter version of his usual flame; it is a carefully prepared area attack that uses Malevolent Shrine to magnify the consequences.
The chapter’s wording and presentation make Divine Flame feel like a secret weapon Sukuna has held back until the right conditions appeared. However, calling it Sukuna’s “full power” requires some qualification. Chapter 259 reveals an extreme and previously withheld application of his technique, but it does not prove that Sukuna has displayed every ability he possesses or exhausted every possible option.
A more precise description is that Sukuna unleashes the domain-enhanced form of his most devastating fire technique. The headline-level “full power” framing captures the spectacle, but it should not be read as a literal technical inventory of all Sukuna’s abilities.
Choso sacrifices himself to save Yuji
Yuji is caught within the attack’s effective area. Choso responds by creating a blood-based protective barrier around him, taking the lethal force of the explosion himself.

After the blast, Yuji finds Choso badly burned and dying. Choso apologizes for not being a perfect teacher, but Yuji tells him that he has already done more than enough. Their farewell gives emotional resolution to the relationship that Choso has insisted on from the moment he accepted Yuji as his younger brother.
Choso’s final act transforms that claim into something undeniable. He does not protect Yuji because of a vague sense of responsibility or a mistaken vision of family. He makes a deliberate sacrifice so that his younger brother can live and continue fighting.

Yuji finally accepts and reciprocates Choso’s brotherly identity. That matters because Choso’s arc has always been tied to guilt, identity, and the question of what it means to be a Death Painting Womb. His death completes the redemptive path that began when he turned away from revenge and chose to stand beside Yuji.
The loss also strikes Yuji at the worst possible moment. The raid has already cost him allies, and the explosion appears to confirm that Sukuna can erase the remaining resistance whenever he finds the correct opening. Choso’s sacrifice gives Yuji another personal reason to keep moving even after his resolve begins to fail.
Aoi Todo returns with a rescue plan
As the smoke clears, Sukuna emerges and Yuji’s resolve starts to falter. Then the chapter reveals a familiar figure: Aoi Todo is back.

Todo’s left hand is bandaged, but his injury has not made Boogie Woogie irrelevant. A flashback explains that Todo and Mei Mei prepared a plan to move allies out of danger. The plan involved swapping people with Mei Mei’s crows, allowing the sorcerers to reposition or escape the area before Sukuna’s attack reached them.

Because of Yuji’s connection to Sukuna, information given to Yuji could potentially be exploited by Sukuna. Keeping Yuji unaware therefore protected the plan from being exposed in advance.
Todo’s return is strategically timed. Malevolent Shrine has collapsed, and Sukuna’s cursed technique has been exhausted, disrupted, or temporarily rendered unavailable after the domain’s use. That creates a narrow opening for Yuji and Todo to attack before Sukuna can fully recover.
The closing image of Yuji and Todo standing together against Sukuna is therefore more than a nostalgic reunion. It restores one of the series’ most effective combat pairings at the exact moment when coordinated movement could matter most. Todo can change positioning, rescue allies, and create openings, while Yuji remains the fighter most capable of directly pressuring Sukuna.
Why Todo’s return changes the battle
- Boogie Woogie is still usable: Todo’s earlier injury has not removed him from the tactical picture.
- He can manipulate positioning: His technique can create sudden attacks, evasions, and rescues rather than relying only on raw power.
- He understands Yuji’s fighting style: Their established teamwork gives Yuji an immediate advantage in reading the next exchange.
- Sukuna is briefly vulnerable: The collapse of Malevolent Shrine and the disruption of Sukuna’s technique create an opening, although not a guaranteed victory.
- The emotional timing is deliberate: Todo appears just after Choso’s death, preventing Yuji from being left alone with his grief and despair.
Still, Todo’s appearance does not mean the battle is won. Chapter 259 establishes an opportunity, not a conclusion. Sukuna has suffered the consequences of using Malevolent Shrine, but he remains the strongest threat on the battlefield.

What Chapter 259 sets up for Chapter 260
Chapter 259 leaves three immediate questions for the next chapter:
- How much of Sukuna’s cursed technique has been disrupted after Malevolent Shrine collapses?
- How effectively can Todo use Boogie Woogie with his injured hand and the support of Mei Mei’s crows?
- Can Yuji turn his grief over Choso’s death into a coordinated attack rather than lose himself to despair?
The chapter closes with Yuji and Todo facing Sukuna together, setting up the direct confrontation in Chapter 260. The immediate tactical advantage belongs to the heroes, but the opening is narrow and temporary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Chapter 259 show Sukuna’s literal full power?
No. Chapter 259 reveals an extraordinarily destructive, domain-enhanced application of Divine Flame, but it does not prove that Sukuna has shown every ability he possesses. “Full power” is dramatic headline language rather than a literal claim that his entire arsenal has been exhausted.
How does Choso die in Chapter 259?
Choso creates a blood-based protective barrier around Yuji and takes the lethal force of Sukuna’s Divine Flame himself. The chapter presents Choso’s death as the consequence of that sacrifice, not as an unresolved injury.
Is Aoi Todo back in Chapter 259?
Yes. Todo appears with his left hand bandaged and explains that he and Mei Mei prepared a Boogie Woogie-based rescue plan involving swaps with Mei Mei’s crows. His return creates a tactical opening for Yuji after Malevolent Shrine collapses and Sukuna’s technique is disrupted.
When was Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 259 released?
The chapter was officially released in English through VIZ on May 19, 2024. The Japanese weekly release window was May 12, 2024.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Chapter 259 reveals Sukuna’s domain-enhanced Divine Flame, a binding-vow-powered attack that turns Malevolent Shrine into a thermobaric area weapon. Choso dies protecting Yuji, completing his brotherly redemption, but Todo’s return gives Yuji a new partner and a narrow opening against a temporarily disrupted Sukuna. The battle is not over—but its emotional and tactical stakes have changed completely.
