Steal This Story, Please!, a documentary portrait of independent journalist Amy Goodman, will open nationally in Australia on 22 October 2026 after its Australian premiere at the Sydney Film Festival. Directed by Carl Deal and Tia Lessin, the film follows Goodman’s reporting and her work with Democracy Now! across three decades.

What the documentary is about

Steal This Story, Please! presents Amy Goodman’s career through reporting assignments, broadcasting work and encounters with political power. The filmmakers describe it as a portrait of independent journalism challenging commercial media and bringing attention to stories and voices they say are routinely silenced.

The film’s central subject is Goodman, whose reporting has taken her to conflict zones and political flashpoints. Its account of journalism’s pressures and possibilities is the film’s stated framing, rather than an independently reported survey of the news industry.

Goodman’s 1991 reporting on the East Timor independence movement is identified by the Sydney Film Festival as a defining experience. The festival synopsis says she witnessed protesters being killed and was beaten while reporting there. It also records that she co-founded Democracy Now! in 1996.

Who made Steal This Story, Please!?

Carl Deal and Tia Lessin directed the documentary. The pair’s film follows Goodman over a period of roughly 30 years, combining her field reporting with the development of Democracy Now! and its focus on independent broadcasting.

The official film materials use Goodman’s own guiding line, “Go to where the silence is, and say something.” In the documentary’s context, that sentence describes a reporting philosophy built around reaching stories that receive limited attention from commercial outlets.

Why the film matters to documentary viewers

The documentary arrives at a moment when audiences are debating how journalism operates under political pressure and commercial constraints. Its contribution is personal and observational: it uses Goodman’s reporting history and broadcasting practice to examine what the filmmakers consider the responsibilities of independent journalism.

Viewers should approach the film as a documentary portrait and release event, not as a neutral industry report. The claims about media silence, corporate influence and the role of independent outlets come from the film’s promotional and festival descriptions. The available release information establishes the film’s subject, creators and screenings, but not audience figures, awards or broader statistical conclusions about journalism.
