The song has a history spanning decades. Mitchell first released “Both Sides Now” on her 1969 album Clouds. A live version is also part of Joni Mitchell at Newport, the 2023 album documenting her performance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival. Why was the appearance significant?
The Grammy performance came after Mitchell had returned to performing at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival. The Recording Academy described that Newport set as her first performance in 20 years. CBS reported that it was her first public performance after the brain aneurysm she suffered in 2015, and covered her account of relearning guitar after the aneurysm.
