Network 10 confirmed on 30 June 2025 that Survivor: Australia V The World would be Jonathan LaPaglia’s final season as host. LaPaglia said the network told him it was “going in a different direction,” describing the decision as a blindside. David Genat was later confirmed as his successor.
What Network 10 confirmed—and what LaPaglia said
Network 10 announced that the upcoming Survivor: Australia V The World would be the last series hosted by LaPaglia. The network praised his contribution over 10 years, but did not publicly explain its internal reasons for the change in the statements reported at the time. PerthNow reported the announcement and LaPaglia’s response on 30 June 2025.
LaPaglia said he received a call thanking him for his work, followed by the explanation that the network was “going in a different direction.” He also said he had been told ratings had “dipped a bit recently” and that the network wanted a drastic change. That ratings explanation is LaPaglia’s account of what he was told; no independently sourced ratings figures or official Network 10 statement identifying ratings as the reason are established in the cited reporting.
He framed the news in the show’s own language, calling it a particularly startling blindside because it had happened to him. His account explains how he understood the decision, but the network’s exact internal deliberations remain unconfirmed.

When was LaPaglia’s last season?
The departure was not an immediate on-screen change. Australia V The World had already been filmed when Network 10 announced it would be LaPaglia’s final hosted season. Viewers would therefore see him host that season before the handover.
Who replaced Jonathan LaPaglia?
David Genat was later confirmed as the next host. In June 2025, coverage discussed Genat as a possible replacement; by 18 February 2026, The Australian Women’s Weekly reported him as the new host and quoted his comments about taking the role. The Australian Women’s Weekly’s February 2026 report covers the host change.

Why the “10 years” description is used
LaPaglia hosted the Australian revival beginning in 2016, and Network 10 described his contribution as spanning 10 years. ABC likewise called his tenure a decade in a February 2025 profile. References to 2015 can concern the program’s earlier inception or franchise history, rather than the start of his hosting tenure. ABC’s interview with LaPaglia, published 22 February 2025, provides background on his decade as host.
LaPaglia became closely associated with the calm, softly spoken questions and the challenge call “Survivors ready? Go!” ABC’s profile also describes his playful interactions with contestants. Those details help explain his recognizable on-screen presence, but they were not given as reasons for his departure.
How his hosting role began
Network Ten announced LaPaglia as host ahead of the Australian revival in 2016. At the time, Network Ten Chief Programming Officer Beverley McGarvey said the network had immediately seen him as the right person to host the series. Network Ten’s appointment announcement documents the start of his tenure.
