Jonah Hill’s Weight Changes and What He Has Said About His Health

Jonah Hill has discussed nutrition, weight changes, body-image struggles and anxiety in separate public statements. Here is what he said—and what those accounts do not establish.

Jonah Hill has spoken at different times about learning about food, changes connected to film roles, painful adolescent body-image struggles and the harm of public comments about his appearance. Those accounts do not add up to one continuous, medically defined “weight-loss journey,” and they do not establish his current health. In 2022, he also disclosed anxiety worsened by media appearances—a separate subject, not an explanation for his weight.

What Hill said about food and weight in 2011

In a 2011 interview with Esquire, Hill said he had been thin in high school, later gained weight, and went to a nutritionist, where he learned which foods were healthy. He did not confirm a numerical estimate of how much weight he had lost. “If I started down the numbers path, I would get no work done,” he said.

He also said he still ate steak sometimes and wanted the nutritionist to help him work out how to include it. His account was about learning about food and habits; it was not a detailed prescribed diet or a verified total weight loss.

What he described after War Dogs in 2016

In a 2016 TIME report about an anecdote Hill told on The Tonight Show, he recalled asking co-star Channing Tatum whether eating less and seeing a trainer would help him get in better shape after War Dogs. Hill said Tatum told him it would, after which Hill consulted a nutritionist and tracked what he ate. He joked that he accidentally emailed his food log to Drake.

This was a story about that period, not a description of Hill’s current routine or a recommendation that the same approach will work for everyone. It does not identify a specific diet or product.

How he discussed adolescent body image in 2018

Hill’s later reflections put the subject in a broader context than weight alone. In Men’s Health coverage of a 2018 interview, he described feeling lonely and wanting to fit in as an overweight 14-year-old. He said he spent much of his young adulthood hearing that he was “fat, gross, and unattractive.”

Working on Mid90s, which he wrote and directed, helped him understand how deeply those comments had affected him, he said. The coverage also recounts his comments about running, push-ups and nutritionist guidance. Those anecdotes do not establish a complete regimen or a guaranteed way to lose weight.

Why Hill asked people to stop commenting on his body

In 2021, Hill asked the public not to comment on his body, whether the remarks were meant as praise or criticism. As quoted by the Los Angeles Times, he wrote: “I know you mean well but I kindly ask that you not comment on my body. [G]ood or bad I want to politely let you know it’s not helpful and doesn’t feel good. Much respect.”

The paper also recounted an earlier post in which Hill addressed paparazzi photographs and years of public mockery. He said he had come to love and accept himself. His request makes clear that appearance-based comments can be unwelcome even when they are framed as compliments; a photograph or public remark cannot establish someone’s health.

What Hill disclosed about anxiety in 2022

Hill’s 2022 statement about mental health was distinct from his comments about weight. In an open letter reported by ABC News, he said he had experienced anxiety attacks for nearly 20 years and that media appearances and public-facing events exacerbated them. He said he would step back from promoting Stutz and future films at that time to protect himself. The Guardian also reported the letter.

Hill’s account concerns anxiety and publicity. It does not say that weight change caused or treated a mental-health condition, and it should not be presented as an explanation for his appearance.

  • He has described adolescent body-image struggles and the emotional effect of public criticism.
  • He asked people not to comment on his body, whether positively or negatively.
  • His 2022 comments about anxiety and publicity are separate from his weight-related remarks.
