When Jon Stewart returned to The Daily Show on February 12, 2024, he criticized both Joe Biden and Donald Trump, arguing that voters were entitled to question whether either was fit for the presidency. The Hollywood Reporter described criticism from some Democrats over his remarks about Biden, but the available account does not identify the critics or show how widespread the reaction was.

What Stewart said in his return monologue

Stewart resumed his former hosting role on February 12, 2024, nearly nine years after leaving the show. With the presidential election campaign underway, he made the ages and fitness of both candidates part of the discussion. The Washington Post reported that his monologue addressed Biden’s response to questions about his memory and fitness, as well as Biden’s comments on Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. The Washington Post’s account covered the remarks.

Stewart’s criticism was not confined to Biden. He also argued that the election’s importance did not exempt Biden, as Donald Trump’s opponent, from scrutiny: “The stakes of this election don’t make Donald Trump’s opponent less subject to scrutiny,” he said. “It actually makes him more subject to scrutiny.”

Why some Democrats objected

A February 14 report from The Hollywood Reporter characterized the response as criticism from some liberals or Democrats. That supports saying Stewart faced some reported criticism; it does not establish a broader backlash among Democrats or liberal viewers. The report’s accessible description does not name the critics, quote their comments, or quantify their number. The Hollywood Reporter’s video report is the source for that characterization.

The tension in the episode was between the risk that jokes about Biden could affect perceptions of a consequential election and Stewart’s contention that high stakes make scrutiny more important, not less. The available coverage documents Stewart’s argument and reports some criticism, but it does not provide a representative sample of critics’ reasons or views.

What the audience figures show

The Associated Press reported Nielsen figures for the episode: 930,000 viewers on Comedy Central, and 1.85 million when a later repeat and simulcasts on other Paramount-owned networks were included. AP described it as the show’s most-watched episode since 2018. These are historical figures for that episode, not a current rating or a measure of how viewers felt about the monologue. The Associated Press report also quoted Stewart saying, “It is the candidates’ job to assuage concerns, not the voters’ job not to mention them.”
