The films on this list show Bernthal working in very different registers, but several are supporting roles rather than showcases built around him.
This is a subjective ranking based on Bernthal’s impact in each role, the strength of the performance and the standing of the film or series—not a ranking of titles by review score. Television and film are judged on their own terms, and screen time matters: a brief appearance can still leave a lasting impression.
The list treats each title as one entry, including the linked Daredevil and The Punisher appearances separately. That gives space to distinguish Castle’s introduction and conflict with Matt Murdock from the standalone series that lets him lead. It also means the ranking weighs different kinds of impact: an extended television role, a flashback-based performance and a brief film turn do not need to work in the same way to be memorable.
Jon Bernthal’s 10 best movies and TV shows
This ranking is not meant to settle a universal question of which Bernthal performance is objectively best. Critics’ guides can be useful for discovering titles, but a film’s or series’ aggregate reception is not a direct measurement of one actor’s work. Here, the order reflects a combination of role impact, Bernthal’s performance and the title’s standing, while noting whether he is the lead, a major television presence or a supporting player.

-
The Punisher (2017–2019) — Frank Castle
Bernthal’s most fully realized action role is Frank Castle, the former Marine turned vigilante. The two-season series gives him room to make Castle more than a force of violence: his grief, discipline and capacity for connection are part of the character’s conflict, not just backstory. This is the most direct choice for viewers who want a character-centered action story built around Bernthal rather than a film in which he appears briefly.
Castle first appears in Bernthal’s Daredevil run, and the series builds on that introduction. Daredevil frames Castle through his clash with Matt Murdock, whose moral boundaries differ from Castle’s uncompromising approach. In The Punisher, the emphasis shifts to Castle as the central character. You can begin here if you want the standalone series; watching Daredevil first provides the earlier setup and the conflict that introduces his version of the character.
The distinction between the two shows matters when comparing Bernthal’s work. In the earlier appearance, Castle is one part of a story that also belongs to Murdock. In the solo series, Bernthal has more room to carry the role and let its contradictions remain in view. Taken together, the titles make the strongest case for the character; as a single starting point, The Punisher is the clearest showcase.
-
The Walking Dead (2010–2012) — Shane Walsh
As Shane Walsh, Rick Grimes’s friend and former ally, Bernthal gives the early seasons a volatile counterweight to Rick’s leadership. Shane’s survival instincts and loyalties pull in opposing directions, and Bernthal makes that tension feel personal rather than simply antagonistic. The role is a major career touchstone, and a strong answer for viewers asking what to watch after discovering Bernthal in his later action work.

Please review EULA and Privacy policy.TV Insider notes that Shane’s television story was extended beyond the character’s early exit in the comic, in part because of Bernthal’s performance. That is an unusual distinction worth keeping in mind: the part’s importance on screen is not limited to the character’s source-material trajectory. Bernthal’s work helped make Shane an important presence in the series’ early story.
Compared with Castle, Shane is not the center of a separate title bearing his name. His impact comes from his place in an ensemble and from the pressure his relationship with Rick brings to the show. That makes The Walking Dead a particularly useful pick if you want to see Bernthal shape a larger television drama through a recurring, consequential role rather than lead a solo action series.
-
The Bear (2022– ) — Mikey Berzatto
Bernthal’s Mikey is often seen in flashbacks, but his influence reaches into the present of the series. Family members remember and argue over him; those memories shape their relationships and the emotional atmosphere of the restaurant. It is a compact role whose importance comes less from screen time than from the space the character occupies in other people’s lives.
The performance reveals a quieter, more episodic dimension of Bernthal’s range. Rather than carrying a continuing action plot, Mikey affects the story through recollection and absence. That is why his limited screen time is not a drawback in the same way it might be for a viewer expecting a conventional lead performance: the character’s effect on the family is part of what the role is doing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.Rotten Tomatoes’ editorial guide notes Emmy recognition for the performance. If you want a contrast with Bernthal’s roles in The Punisher or The Walking Dead, this is the most immediate choice on the list: it is a family drama, and the performance’s weight is conveyed through memory as much as through scenes in the present. It is also a good recommendation for someone who has seen The Bear and wants to find more of Bernthal’s work.
-
Sicario (2015) — Ted
In Denis Villeneuve’s crime thriller, Bernthal plays Ted, a supporting character in a story whose focus lies elsewhere. The role is brief compared with his television work, but he makes an impression within the film’s tightly controlled world of threat and uncertainty. This is a concentrated supporting turn, not an extended character arc.
Sicario is worth choosing for the contrast: Bernthal is not carrying the plot, and his performance works in a limited window rather than across a full series. If your priority is seeing him lead, begin with The Punisher or The Walking Dead. If you want to see how he fits into a carefully assembled crime film, this is one of the strongest options.

Its place in this ranking also illustrates why prominence of a title and size of an actor’s role should not be confused. A well-known film can be a useful Bernthal recommendation without being a Bernthal showcase. The appeal here is the distinct contribution he makes inside a larger story.

Ford v Ferrari (2019) — Lee Iacocca
Bernthal plays automotive executive Lee Iacocca in James Mangold’s racing drama. The film’s central momentum comes from the people building and driving the cars, so Bernthal’s role is supporting. He brings a corporate edge to a story otherwise driven by engineering, competition and the personalities behind the wheel.
This is a good choice for a viewer who wants Bernthal in a polished ensemble drama rather than a crime story or superhero property. It also offers a different comparison from Sicario: both are supporting parts in films with a broader focus, but Ford v Ferrari sits in a racing-drama setting rather than a crime thriller.
Choose it for the film’s ensemble and for another example of Bernthal adjusting to the scale of a larger production. It should not be sold as a long, character-centered examination of Iacocca; the recommendation is the contribution within the movie, not a claim that the role dominates it.
-
Wind River (2017) — Matt
Bernthal’s role as Matt is brief, but it contains one of the film’s most affecting moments: the Rotten Tomatoes guide singles out his monologue. The performance shows how little screen time a supporting actor needs when a scene has a clear emotional purpose. It is among the most direct answers to the question of whether a small role can still merit a place on a best-performances list.

His appearance is a concentrated highlight within a larger crime drama. In that respect, it belongs in a different category from The Punisher, where the role’s development is the central attraction.
The recommendation is strongest for viewers who value a memorable scene over screen-time quantity. The role is not a substitute for a Bernthal-led show, but its brevity makes the moment stand out rather than diminish it.
-
Baby Driver (2017) — Griff
As Griff, a member of the heist crew, Bernthal gets a sharp supporting turn in Edgar Wright’s crime-action comedy. The role’s appeal is its combination of menace and dry humor. Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal, in a review line reproduced by Rotten Tomatoes, called Griff “a hard case and a funny one.”
The film is an easy recommendation if you want to see Bernthal in a fast-moving ensemble that makes room for comic timing as well as tension. That balance gives this part a different flavor from the severe or conflicted characters that often define his most prominent television work.

-
Fury (2014) — Grady “Coon-Ass” Travis
In David Ayer’s World War II film, Bernthal plays Grady Travis, a member of a tank crew. This is an ensemble role within a story shaped by the crew’s shared experience, rather than a solo showcase. Bernthal’s presence fits the film’s rough, confrontational military setting.

Choose Fury for a war-film performance and for another example of Bernthal working inside a larger group of characters. The comparison with The Punisher is useful but limited: both let him work in an action-oriented register, yet one centers Castle while the other places Travis within a crew. The latter is the better pick if you want the ensemble context as much as the individual performance.
Its position here reflects the breadth of the list, not an assertion that every viewer will prefer it to the more prominent television roles. It adds a war-film mode to a ranking otherwise spanning crime, family drama, superhero television and racing.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) — Brad
Bernthal plays Brad in Martin Scorsese’s financial-crime film. The part is supporting, but the movie gives him a place in a world of brash personalities and escalating schemes. It is an early film credit to seek out if you are following his career beyond television.
Do not mistake the film’s prominence for a large Bernthal role: his contribution is one part of a broad ensemble. That caveat is important for anyone searching specifically for the best Bernthal-led titles. The film belongs here as a worthwhile supporting appearance, not as a substitute for the more expansive parts in The Punisher or The Walking Dead.
Among the film entries, it is another way to see him inside a crime story, but the role’s scale differs from the television characters that occupy the top of this ranking. The recommendation is for viewers interested in his filmography and in how a recognizable supporting player can contribute to a much larger cast.
-
Daredevil (2016) — Frank Castle
Bernthal’s first screen appearance as the Punisher comes in the second season of Daredevil. The story puts Castle’s uncompromising approach to justice against Matt Murdock’s moral boundaries, giving the character a conflict that the standalone series later develops in a different way. The editorial guide emphasizes the character’s internal conflict and pathos, which is why this introduction is more than a simple prelude to the spin-off.

Please review EULA and Privacy policy.Because Castle then leads The Punisher, watching Daredevil first gives useful context for his introduction and his clash with Murdock. If you only want Bernthal’s character-centered series, start with The Punisher; if you want the full on-screen setup, begin here. The two entries are linked, but they offer different viewing experiences: a first appearance within an ensemble superhero series and a later solo title.
This ranking lists them separately to make that distinction clear, not because they are unrelated performances. A viewer planning to watch both can treat Daredevil as the setup and The Punisher as the longer character-focused continuation. A viewer choosing only one should pick based on whether they want the introduction and Murdock conflict or the standalone series.
How to choose what to watch first
The best starting point depends on what you want from a Bernthal performance: a lead role, a major ensemble character, a compact guest turn or a supporting film appearance. Use this guide to match the title to the viewing mood rather than treating the ranking as a required watch order.
| If you want… | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bernthal’s signature action character | The Punisher | Castle leads the two-season series; Daredevil provides his earlier introduction. |
| The full setup for Frank Castle | Daredevil, then The Punisher | The first title introduces Castle through his conflict with Matt Murdock; the second gives him a standalone series. |
| The role that established him as a major television presence | The Walking Dead | Shane is a central early-series character and a career touchstone. |
| A smaller role with a large emotional effect | The Bear | Mikey’s impact is felt through flashbacks and family memory. |
| A brief, affecting film appearance | Wind River | The role is short, with a standout monologue noted by the Rotten Tomatoes guide. |
| Crime with a comic edge | Baby Driver | Griff combines menace and humor in a supporting role. |
| A crime thriller with Bernthal in a supporting part | Sicario | His role is brief and concentrated within a story whose focus lies elsewhere. |
| A film ensemble rather than a Bernthal-led story | Ford v Ferrari or Fury | Both place him in a supporting role within a larger ensemble, in very different settings. |
For a first-time viewer, the simplest route is to pick the format you prefer. If you want a series that centers on Bernthal, choose The Punisher. If you want the television role TV Insider identifies as a major career touchstone, try The Walking Dead. If you have already watched either and want a contrast, The Bear offers a short, flashback-based performance whose narrative effect exceeds its screen time.
Why this ranking includes both leads and supporting roles
Bernthal is especially recognizable in character-driven television, where a role can develop across multiple episodes. That format accounts for the top entries: Castle’s inner conflict anchors The Punisher, Shane’s shifting relationship with Rick shapes The Walking Dead, and Mikey’s absence becomes a force within The Bear. Their screen-time profiles differ, but each has a clear effect on the story around him.

The films demonstrate a different kind of value. In Wind River and Baby Driver, a limited role can still produce a memorable scene or a distinctive character. In Sicario, Ford v Ferrari, Fury and The Wolf of Wall Street, the pleasure is seeing Bernthal contribute to films whose stories are not centered on him. The list does not treat a short appearance as equivalent to a lead role; it recognizes that a supporting performance can still be worth seeking out for a particular scene, tone or ensemble contribution.
This distinction also helps answer the common question, “What’s his best role?” The answer depends on what “best” means. For a character-centered action performance, Castle is the clearest pick. For a major early television role, Shane is the recommendation. For a compact performance whose emotional consequences ripple through a family drama, Mikey makes the strongest case. For a film appearance, there is no single answer: Wind River is notable for a brief affecting moment, while Baby Driver offers menace with humor.
Aggregated critic and audience scores, including Rotten Tomatoes ratings, describe a title’s reception, not an actor-specific measure of performance. Scores can also change over time, so they are not a reliable substitute for judging Bernthal’s work in a particular role. A ranking based only on those numbers would answer a different question—how titles are reviewed overall—rather than which performances make the best introduction to Bernthal.

More Bernthal performances worth seeking out
If these ten leave you wanting more, credible alternatives include King Richard, in which he plays Rick Macci; the limited series We Own This City, where he portrays Sgt. Wayne Jenkins; The Accountant; The Peanut Butter Falcon; Widows; The Many Saints of Newark; and Show Me a Hero. These are useful next picks for viewers who want to follow his work into sports drama, crime, ensemble films or another television role. The list of alternatives is intentionally a set of directions rather than a claim that they outrank the ten featured entries in every respect.
For the clearest contrast with the Punisher, try The Bear. For the clearest route from his first appearance as Castle to his standalone story, watch Daredevil before The Punisher. For another ensemble film appearance, select among Sicario, Ford v Ferrari, Fury and The Wolf of Wall Street according to whether you want crime, racing, war or financial crime.
Readers sometimes phrase the question as “What’s your favorite Jon Bernthal’s movie?” There is no objective answer, and the wording can conceal two different requests: a favorite movie featuring him, or his strongest individual performance. If the priority is his performance, the top television choices give him more room; if the priority is a film recommendation, the supporting turns here show several distinct registers without implying that he leads those films.
Frequently asked questions
What is Jon Bernthal’s best-known role?
His best-known recurring screen character is Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher. Bernthal first played Castle in Daredevil before leading the two-season The Punisher series. Shane Walsh in The Walking Dead is another major career touchstone.
Should I watch Daredevil before The Punisher?
It is useful but not essential to follow the path described here. Daredevil introduces Bernthal’s Castle and establishes his conflict with Matt Murdock; The Punisher is the more direct starting point if you want the standalone, character-centered series.
What should I watch after The Walking Dead?
For another major television role, try The Punisher. For a contrast in tone and role size, try The Bear, where Bernthal plays Mikey largely in flashbacks and the character’s influence is felt through family memory. For a film supporting turn, Baby Driver and Wind River are strong options.
Is Bernthal a lead in all of these movies?
No. Several of the film entries are supporting roles: he plays Ted in Sicario, Lee Iacocca in Ford v Ferrari, Matt in Wind River, Griff in Baby Driver, Grady Travis in Fury and Brad in The Wolf of Wall Street. The film’s prominence does not necessarily mean Bernthal has a large part.
Which Bernthal role has the least screen time but still makes an impact?
Wind River is a clear example. Bernthal’s role as Matt is brief, but the Rotten Tomatoes editorial guide highlights an affecting monologue. Mikey in The Bear is another compact role whose impact comes from the character’s presence in flashbacks and family memory.

Yes. The research identifies King Richard, We Own This City, The Accountant, The Peanut Butter Falcon, Widows, The Many Saints of Newark and Show Me a Hero as credible alternatives.
