Its stories begin with everyday people facing unsettling crises, then connect into a larger mystery about humanity. Netflix describes the episodes as stand-alone stories that come together in the finale.
What is Nightmares and Daydreams about?
The series follows ordinary people whose personal problems lead them into strange, frightening situations. Netflix’s promotional description frames the larger story around forces threatening humanity and questions about the origins of the world; that is the show’s premise, not a verified claim about aliens or a single definitive explanation of existence. The appeal is the contrast between familiar Indonesian settings and uncanny science-fiction and supernatural ideas.
Creator Joko Anwar told Netflix Tudum, “This series explores the sci-fi supernatural genre.” He has also said he wanted to make something Indonesian viewers could relate to. Netflix says the episodes begin with elements familiar to local audiences while carrying social and political themes.
How the seven episodes fit together
Each episode has its own central predicament, while the series gradually links the stories. Netflix says the finale ties them together. The official episode descriptions establish the variety of the anthology without requiring viewers to treat every premise as the same kind of horror.

Setting, creator and cast
Netflix places the stories in Jakarta, with events spanning 1985 to 2024 in its announcement; that range does not mean every episode is explicitly dated. The series was filmed in Jakarta and Cirebon. Anwar is the writer-director and executive producer, with Ray Farandy Pakpahan, Tommy Dewo and Randolph Zaini also credited as directors.
The ensemble includes Ario Bayu, Marissa Anita, Asmara Abigail, Fachri Albar, Lukman Sardi, Nirina Zubir, Yoga Pratama and Karina Salim, among others. Netflix describes the series as an original production, not an adaptation of a book.

That phrase is a playful headline, not a promise made by the series. The show does build toward a broader mystery connecting its separate stories, but the official descriptions do not establish a single philosophical answer or prescribe one interpretation. Viewers can expect supernatural suspense, science-fiction speculation and stories rooted in Indonesian social context—not a documentary explanation of life’s meaning.
