Joker: Folie à Deux opened in U.S. and Canadian theaters to $37.7 million, less than half the $96.2 million opening of 2019’s Joker. The sequel ultimately earned about $207.5 million worldwide, including $58.3 million domestically. Its steep second-weekend drop and the reported cost of making it explain why its box-office start drew so much attention.
How did Joker: Folie à Deux open?
The Todd Phillips sequel opened domestically October 4–6, 2024, with $37,678,467, according to Box Office Mojo. That was a sharp contrast with Joker (2019), which opened to $96,202,337 domestically, according to The Numbers.
At the time, Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian told the Associated Press: “The biggest issue of all is the reported budget. A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be a solid debut.” His comment addressed this film’s reported costs; it is not a universal box-office rule. The AP also reported that opening-night audience polling gave the sequel a D CinemaScore, an audience grade rather than a measure of every viewer’s reaction. Associated Press.

Did the film make its money back?
Available box-office totals do not establish Warner Bros.’ profit or loss. The Numbers lists a $190 million production-budget estimate; Variety reported a $200 million price tag and cited sources familiar with the film’s financials for a $450 million estimated break-even point. Variety’s figure is sourced industry reporting, not a confirmed studio statement or an audited threshold. Variety.
A theatrical gross-to-budget comparison cannot establish profitability: theaters and distributors share ticket revenue, and a production-budget estimate does not include every cost or revenue stream. The sequel’s $207.5 million worldwide gross is therefore evidence of its theatrical performance, not by itself a final accounting of the film’s financial result.
