The Venice Biennale’s official film listing describes it as standalone. DC lists the film under crime-and-gangster and drama. Phillips said he set it in a broken-down Gotham sometime in the late 1970s to early 1980s, drawing on an era of character-driven films he admired. Is Joker worth watching?
As a review judgment, the film is most compelling when it stays close to Arthur’s experience: Phoenix makes his physical discomfort, need for recognition, and growing volatility visible even in quiet moments. The performance gives the character study a strong focal point, and the setting supports its sense of a city closing in on him.

Phillips said the role was written with Phoenix in mind, praising the actor’s transformative approach. That statement explains the filmmakers’ intent; whether the performance works for you depends on your tolerance for an intense, often uncomfortable portrait. The film’s deliberate, bleak approach may feel absorbing to viewers drawn to psychological crime drama, but ponderous or alienating to those looking for a brisk thriller or a conventional superhero story.

Is Joker too violent?
It is a violent film, and the violence is part of its oppressive tone rather than an occasional detour from it. The UK BBFC classifies the 2D cinema version as containing “strong bloody violence, language.” That guidance applies to the UK version and is not a universal classification.
