Spoilers for Joker: Folie à Deux (2024). Arthur Fleck rejects the Joker persona in court, returns to Arkham, and is fatally stabbed by another inmate. The final image suggests that the Joker may live on as an idea or symbol, but it does not confirm a named successor or show what happens next. Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Phillips have described Arthur’s last moments as warm and peaceful, even as the plot ends in murder.
What happens at the end of Joker: Folie à Deux?
During his murder trial, Arthur tells the court there is no separate Joker identity and accepts responsibility for his crimes. Lee Quinzel is drawn to the Joker persona, but Arthur’s renunciation breaks the bond she had with that public image.
A courthouse bombing briefly gives Arthur a chance to escape. He finds Lee, who rejects him after he has turned away from Joker. Arthur returns to Arkham State Hospital. A fellow inmate approaches him with a joke, then stabs him. As Arthur bleeds to death, the inmate carves a smile into his own face.
How do Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips interpret Arthur’s final moments?
Phoenix sees warmth in Arthur listening
Phoenix has said the final exchange feels warm because Arthur listens to the nervous young inmate tell a joke. The moment focuses on Arthur giving someone his attention, rather than performing the Joker for an audience. “There’s a warmth in that scene, which is nice,” Phoenix said of Arthur’s death. Variety Australia and The Independent carried the interview remarks.

Phillips reads the ending as Arthur finding peace
Phillips connects Arthur’s willingness to hear the joke with his struggle to accept himself and his own desire to make people laugh. “I think Arthur has found peace with the idea, with the struggle that it’s okay to be yourself. And that’s really what he’s always struggled with, you know what I mean?” Phillips said. He added, “I like to think he died at peace in a way being himself.”
That is Phillips’s interpretation of Arthur’s state of mind, not a change to the literal outcome: Arthur is killed. The film lets a final human moment coexist with a violent death rather than making one cancel out the other.

Does the inmate become the Joker?
The inmate’s actions—stabbing Arthur and carving a smile into his own face—deliberately evoke Joker imagery. The ending therefore suggests that another person may take up the symbols Arthur has rejected, or that the Joker can persist as an idea beyond Arthur himself.
That implication is not the same as a confirmed successor story. The film does not name the inmate, show his later life, or establish that he becomes the familiar Joker. DC.com essayist Jules Chin Greene reads the scene as showing that Arthur is not the Joker and that the Joker survives as a symbol in other people; the page makes clear that the essay reflects its author’s view, not necessarily DC or Warner Bros. Discovery’s position. DC.com’s ending essay offers that interpretation.

What did Phillips mean by “an origin story”?
Phillips has described the first film’s script as calling it “An origin story,” not “the origin story.” “The first film is called Joker. It’s not called The Joker,” he said. “And the first film under the script always said ‘An origin story.’ Never said the origin story.” That distinction leaves room for Arthur to have inspired the Joker identity without being the sole or definitive version of the character.
It also helps explain why the sequel can end with Arthur’s death while evoking the continuation of Joker imagery. Phillips’s comment frames that possibility; it does not confirm a future film or a particular character’s fate.
