Actor Johnny Wactor was shot and killed in downtown Los Angeles on May 25, 2024, after leaving a bartending shift. His co-worker and friend Anita Joy said he stepped between her and the person who shot him, then fell into her arms. That is the account behind the headline’s phrase “died in my arms”; police and prosecutors described the incident and its aftermath separately.
What Anita Joy said happened
Joy and Wactor had finished work and were walking toward their cars near Hope Street and Pico Boulevard in downtown Los Angeles when they encountered people around Wactor’s vehicle. In an account published by the Los Angeles Times, Joy said they initially thought the car was being towed. She said Wactor stood between her and the man who shot him, and fell back into her arms.
“Johnny was between me and the man who shot him — as I heard the shot ring into the night, he forcefully tumbled back into my arms”
The quotation is Joy’s recollection as published by the Times. The newspaper also reported her asking, “Hunny, you ok?!” and Wactor replying, “Nope! Shot!” ABC’s Good Morning America quoted Joy describing her friend of eight years “dying in my arms in the streets of DTLA [Downtown Los Angeles]” after they had left their bartending shift. “Shielding her” is a summary of Joy’s account that Wactor placed himself between her and the shooter; it is not a separate finding about his intent.

What police said about the encounter
The Times relayed a police description that three people had raised Wactor’s vehicle with a floor jack and were in the process of stealing its catalytic converter. The release, as quoted by the newspaper, characterized Wactor as having been shot “without provocation.” Those are descriptions attributed to police, not details independently established by Joy’s account.
The shooting occurred on May 25, 2024. CBS Los Angeles reported it happened at about 3:30 a.m.; the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s August 19 announcement gave the time as about 3:25 a.m. The difference is small, but the more precise figure belongs to the official announcement and should be attributed to it.

Charges and court developments
The prosecution timeline below distinguishes the District Attorney’s dated announcements and the later Associated Press report. Charges are allegations, not findings of guilt.
| Date | What was reported |
|---|---|
| August 19, 2024 | The Los Angeles County District Attorney announced charges against four defendants. Robert Barceleau was charged with murder with a special-circumstance allegation; Sergio Estrada was charged with murder; Leonel Gutierrez was charged with attempted robbery and grand theft; and Frank Olano was charged with accessory-after-the-fact and other charges. These were allegations at the time of the announcement. |
| September 12, 2024 | The District Attorney’s Office said Gutierrez pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and grand theft with a firearm allegation. |
| January 16, 2025 | The Associated Press reported that Gutierrez and Olano had received state prison sentences for lesser crimes connected with the killing. The AP also reported that Barceleau and Estrada had pleaded not guilty and that a judge found sufficient evidence to send their cases to trial. |
The January 2025 report is a dated snapshot, not a statement of the case’s current status. The Los Angeles Superior Court’s criminal case access information page explains access to criminal-case information but does not, by itself, establish a case-specific update here. No later outcome for Barceleau or Estrada is established by the dated reporting above.
