Where is Johnny Carson’s former mansion, and what is the latest listed price?
The estate is at 400 Saint Cloud Road, Los Angeles, California 90077, in East Gate Bel Air. Realtor.com’s page, carrying TheMLSCLAW listing number 26639081, displayed the property for sale at $32,995,000 when it was updated September 23, 2026. The Los Angeles Times had reported an asking price of $39,995,000 on March 5, 2026. The two snapshots differ by $7 million, but the available sources do not establish the exact date or sequence of any price changes. Check a refreshed listing or contact the listing broker for current status and price.
Who built the house, and when did the Carsons live there?
The Los Angeles Times reports that the residence was built between 1949 and 1950 for film producer and director Mervyn LeRoy. Johnny and Joanna Carson bought it around 1972, around the time The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson moved to Burbank. Architectural Digest describes it as a home Carson lived in during the 1970s and 1980s. After the couple divorced in 1985, Joanna retained the property and later oversaw renovations in the 2000s.
The house is described as mid-century modern. Carson is credited with adding the tennis court; the available reporting does not attribute the original house’s design or construction to him.

How large is the Bel-Air estate?
Realtor.com’s listing data, attributed to TheMLSCLAW, gives the property 9,052 square feet of living area, six bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, and a 1.5-acre lot. The listing identifies 1950 as the year built. These are listing specifications, rather than an independent measurement of the property.
What are the house and grounds like?
Main residence
The Los Angeles Times describes a gated compound with a security booth, motor court, and two garages. Inside the main house are a great room with a wet bar, formal dining area, family room, kitchen with an island and breakfast nook, wood-paneled den, basement storage, and wine cellar. A rotunda leads to the primary suite.
