John Oliver’s 2019 Last Week Tonight segment on legal immigration pushed back on Donald Trump’s “get in line” rhetoric by pointing out that the U.S. system does not offer every prospective immigrant a line to join. The segment explained several broad pathways and used them to show why legal immigration is not a simple, universal queue.
Which John Oliver segment does this refer to?
The strongest match is the 2019 Last Week Tonight segment about legal immigration. TIME’s contemporaneous account describes Oliver responding to Trump’s remarks that the country was “full.” The title is a descriptive reference, not a confirmed official episode name.

Oliver’s focus was the gap between the instruction to “get in line” and the complicated, limited routes that the system actually provides. TIME’s summary offers a useful account of the segment’s argument, but it is not a guide to current immigration law. TIME’s 2019 summary of the segment.
Why “get in line” was the point of the segment
The phrase makes immigration sound like one orderly queue that anyone can enter by following the rules. Oliver’s criticism, as TIME recounts it, was that this framing overlooks how eligibility depends on the particular pathway—and that some people may have no applicable line at all. TIME attributes this pointed conclusion to him: “you should at least make sure they actually have a line to stand in.”

That is the segment’s central distinction: calling for legal immigration does not, by itself, explain which route a person could use, whether they qualify, or whether a route is available to them. Oliver used humor to challenge rhetoric that treats the process as straightforward while criticizing barriers and complexity in the legal system.
The four broad pathways discussed in the segment
TIME summarizes four categories used in the episode’s explanation. They describe the segment’s framework, not a complete list of immigration options or a statement of present-day eligibility rules.
Rank #2
| Pathway | Basis described | What the distinction shows |
|---|---|---|
| Family sponsorship | A qualifying family relationship | Access depends on a relationship that meets the applicable rules; it is not an open queue for everyone. |
| Employment | Employment-related eligibility | A work-based route depends on meeting the relevant criteria rather than simply asking to join a general line. |
| Diversity visa lottery | Selection by lottery | Selection is not equivalent to a guaranteed place or a universal application path. |
| Refugee or asylum pathways | A refugee or asylum claim | These are distinct from family- or employment-based routes and concern protection claims. |
The point of the categories is not that every person can choose freely among them. Each rests on a different basis, and the segment’s broad overview should not be mistaken for current procedural advice.
What the segment’s diversity-lottery figures mean
TIME reported that Oliver cited 22 million diversity visa applicants and 50,000 selected for 2017. Those are historical figures connected to the segment’s discussion, not current annual totals or a promise about anyone’s chances today. The numbers illustrate the mismatch between an apparently simple instruction to “get in line” and pathways that may be limited or involve selection.
Rank #3
What to take from the commentary—and what it does not establish
The segment is political commentary about how immigration is described, not an up-to-date explanation of how to apply. Its lasting argument is narrower and clearer: “follow the rules” is not a complete answer when the available route depends on a person’s circumstances and some people may not have a route that fits.
TIME’s account is contemporaneous reporting about the episode, while a third-party transcript also reflects its subject and content but may contain transcription errors. Neither source establishes current eligibility criteria, procedures, or totals. Anyone making an immigration decision should consult current official U.S. government guidance or qualified legal advice rather than rely on a 2019 comedy segment.
