Discovery’s pressroom lists an official image of Lithgow for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, dated March 25, 2026. The image offers a first look at him in character; the pressroom listing confirms the image and its context, but does not identify the costume’s individual design details.
What the official image shows
Warner Bros. Discovery’s pressroom listing, titled “John Lithgow,” is associated with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and dated March 25, 2026. It is the official source for the image reveal. Describe visible features from the image itself rather than treating them as details confirmed by the listing’s text. View the Warner Bros. Discovery pressroom listing.
The listing’s textual metadata does not establish who designed any particular garment or accessory in the image. Warner Bros. Discovery’s production announcement credits Holly Waddington as costume designer, but that credit alone does not attribute a specific visible choice to her. The official production announcement.
Who is John Lithgow playing?
Lithgow is playing Albus Dumbledore, Hogwarts’ headmaster. Warner Bros. Discovery’s casting announcement names him for the role, and the Associated Press independently reported the casting. In the announcement, showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner and director and executive producer Mark Mylod said: “We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch,” Warner Bros. How this Dumbledore differs from the film-era costumes
The new image belongs to the HBO production; the earlier films provide franchise history, not evidence of the HBO costume’s design brief. Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo describes how Dumbledore’s film costumes changed over those movies: many early looks used antique fabric and old tapestry, while later costumes shifted toward more muted colors and a straighter, whiter beard as the character changed. Those observations apply to the film series only. Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo’s costume discussion.
The same Studio Tour page says more than 25,000 unique clothing items were created for the Harry Potter films. That figure concerns the films, not the new HBO series, and the page does not state a year for the statistic. Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo.

The series adapts J.K. Rowling’s books, with its first season titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The current official franchise overview lists the series for Christmas 2026.
