John Legend says he and Chrissy Teigen have grown together through parenthood, joy and difficult experiences. In a PEOPLE exclusive published September 21, 2025, Legend reflected on their 12 years of marriage and said they marked the anniversary with a dinner date.

“I think being parents forces you to grow up, and it changes your priorities,” he said. He added that the couple had experienced “all the joy” together, as well as “tragedy together and challenges together.”
Legend said those experiences helped cement their bond: “I think all of that helps cement the bond and the relationship that you have, because you know you can go through all this together with a partner, and I think that’s really been the story of our relationship.” He summed up their shared history this way: “We’ve grown up together and been through all the highs and lows together.”

How they marked their 12th anniversary
Legend said the couple celebrated their 12th anniversary with a nice dinner date. The interview describes them as parents of four children.

According to the PEOPLE coverage, Legend and Teigen legally married at a New York City courthouse on September 10, 2013, with Irina Shayk as their witness. They held a wedding in Lake Como, Italy, days later. The article says they had become engaged in 2011 while vacationing in the Maldives, and renewed their vows in Italy for their tenth anniversary in 2023.

Teigen’s wedding-day recollections
Teigen recalled dropping her ring during the vows and saying “Oh, s—” into the microphone. She also said Stevie Wonder performed “Ribbon in the Sky” for their first dance. She was too nervous to dance in front of the guests and described not having a proper first dance as more of a regret than a cherished memory.
