Yes—but being a victim does not make Simon Latch morally innocent, and his questionable choices do not prove he is guilty of murder. That uneasy distinction is at the heart of John Grisham’s The Widow, a legal thriller with a whodunit element. Sarah-Jane Coyle frames the question as whether there is such a thing as the “perfect victim.” The novel’s interest lies in how difficult it can be to extend sympathy to someone society is already inclined to distrust.
What is The Widow about?
Simon Latch is a small-time lawyer in rural Virginia whose practice is struggling as his marriage deteriorates and money grows tight. An elderly widow, Eleanor Barnett, asks him to prepare a new will after her husband leaves her a substantial fortune. Simon keeps her wealth quiet, but her account begins to unravel. After a car accident and hospitalization, Eleanor dies, and Simon is accused of murdering her. He must find the real killer to clear his name.
Kirkus reports that Simon has practiced in Braxton, Virginia, for 18 years and that Eleanor wants to disinherit her stepsons. Its account also emphasizes Simon’s temptation by the prospect of financial gain and his ethically questionable choices. Those details help explain why he is not an uncomplicated innocent, but they are plot and character descriptions from a review, not findings about a real case.
The U.S. hardcover was published by Doubleday on October 21, 2025. Penguin Random House lists that edition at 416 pages; its downloadable audiobook is listed at 14 hours 24 minutes. A paperback is listed with an August 4, 2026 publication date. Format details and availability vary by edition and market, so check the publisher’s book listing for current information.

Can a morally compromised person still be a victim?
Victimhood, innocence, and good character are different questions. Simon may be accused of a crime he did not commit and still have behaved selfishly or irresponsibly. Conversely, his ethical failings do not establish that he killed Eleanor. The tension is what makes the title question more than a simple test of whether the reader likes him.
In her October 24, 2025 essay for The Conversation, Sarah-Jane Coyle, a PhD Candidate at Queen’s University Belfast, asks: “Would we have sympathy if he was manipulated and wrongly accused of her murder?” She connects the question to criminologist Nils Christie’s idea of the “ideal victim”: a person society readily recognizes as deserving sympathy. In Coyle’s reading, Eleanor’s age may make her vulnerability easier to recognize, while stereotypes of lawyers as opportunistic or manipulative can make Simon a harder person to believe or pity.

Coyle does not present either character as wholly blameless or wholly malevolent. Her interpretation instead draws attention to the reader’s standards: do we reserve compassion for people who appear innocent in every respect, or can someone’s suffering matter even when their conduct is compromised? That is an interpretive lens, not a legal conclusion or an uncontested claim about how all readers respond.
Is it a legal thriller or a whodunit?
Both labels apply, but they do not carry equal weight for every reader. The publisher markets The Widow as Grisham’s “first-ever whodunit,” while Kirkus describes a move into whodunit territory and praises the handling of legal complexities. Kirkus also calls the whodunit “unremarkable.”

Coyle is more cautious about its appeal to mystery-first readers: she writes that the whodunit takes up less than a quarter of the book, that the shift into detective work is abrupt, and that readers may want more clues. She also finds the ending rushed and detached. These are her critical judgments, not a measured consensus among readers.
| What you want from the book | What the cited criticism suggests |
|---|---|
| Legal complications and morally ambiguous characters | Kirkus praises Grisham’s handling of the legal complexities; Coyle finds the overlap between law and morality rewarding. |
| A clue-rich, steadily paced mystery puzzle | Coyle says the whodunit occupies less than a quarter of the novel, its turn toward detective work feels abrupt, and the ending feels rushed. Kirkus calls the whodunit unremarkable. |
The distinction is useful when deciding whether the book suits your tastes: its critical case is stronger for readers drawn to legal conflict and difficult questions about guilt and sympathy than for readers seeking a mystery built chiefly around clue-solving. That is a reading of the two cited reviews, not a claim about universal response.

What does the legal conflict add to the victimhood question?
Coyle reads Simon’s predicament as a clash between legal rules and moral judgment. In her account, his choices can be morally questionable while technically legal; when he tries to clear himself, he cannot simply rely on professional knowledge or a loophole to guarantee justice. The resulting tension asks whether law can determine guilt while public sympathy remains shaped by character and reputation.
Coyle argues that the novel’s turn toward detective work can be read as a disruption of order in the service of avoiding a greater disorder. Her interpretation is that readers interested in the murky overlap between law and morality, innocence and guilt, victim and perpetrator may find that tension more compelling than the mechanics of the mystery itself.

Who is likely to enjoy The Widow?
- Consider it if you like legal-thriller situations, ethically compromised protagonists, or stories that leave moral judgment unsettled.
- Temper expectations if your main priority is a dense trail of clues, a carefully sustained whodunit, or a mystery-first pace. Coyle’s review suggests those elements are comparatively limited.
Those are points of fit drawn from the publisher’s description and the two cited critical perspectives, not a promise about how every reader will experience the book.
